Why We're Buying

It's impossible to deny the winemaking brilliance of Domaine Sylvain Cathiard. Even during a tumultuous 2016 growing season, it produced a Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux with balance, energy, and depth. After trying the pinot noir, wine critic William Kelley wrote, "the quality Cathiard has achieved with this vintage will only add fuel to the fire."

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux is a magical wine in the making, wafting from he glass with a profound bouquet of cherries, licorice, exotic spices, rich soil tones and orange rind. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, multidimensional and muscular, with a deep and concentrated score, rich and powdery tannins and a long, succulent finish. (WK)

Firm reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background though discreet spice elements are still appreciable. The racy and intense middle weight plus flavors also brim with minerality on the chiseled finish that is intensely saline in character, all wrapped in a beautifully complex finish that goes on and on. This is restrained but exceptionally classy.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux 1er Cru is perhaps the overlooked gem within Cathiard’s portfolio, a view shared by the winemaker himself. This latest iteration has brilliant delineation on the nose, offering intense blackberry, raspberry and crushed mineral aromas that blossom with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, a killer line of acidity and a sense of symmetry toward the long finish. This is outstanding. (NM)

Picked last by Sébastien Cathiard in most vintages, including 2018, this parcel of 70-year-old vines faces north east and is cooled by air currents from the Combe d'Orveaux. It's a very graceful, delicate wine that wouldn't look out of place in nearby Chambolle-Musigny: taut, floral and beautifully defined with chalky minerality, filigree tannins and crunchy black cherry flavours.
