Why We're Buying

Investing in 2016 Joseph Drouhin Clos Des Mouches means investing in history. The vineyard at the southern end of the Beaune appellation was one of the first that Maurice Drouhin purchased in the 1920s. Nearly a century later, this pinot noir has retained the mythical stature that made it an international sensation. On the palate, 2016 Clos Des Mouches is deep, sweeping, and graceful. The medium body unleashes layers of sweet dark fruit, spice, coffee, cocoa, orange, and oak. Silky tannins blend harmoniously into the body, while notes of oyster shells punctuate the air. Anyone who gives this pinot noir a decade in the cellar will be richly rewarded. Joseph Drouhin doesn't just make one investment-worthy wine from Le Clos des Mouches. It makes two, a red and a white. The pinot noir serves as a slightly more affordable companion to the estate's chardonnay. According to Wine-Searcher.com, it's the most critically acclaimed wine from the appellation.

A discreet application of wood sets off the ripe and very fresh aromas of plum, various red berries and a pretty floral element. The opulent and highly seductive medium weight flavors are shaped by firm but not rigid tannins on the balanced finish. This should age gracefully and yet be approachable after only 5ish years.

A rich red, with a velvety texture showing off floral, cherry, strawberry, licorice and mineral flavors. Beautifully balanced and firmly structured, this lingers with fresh cherry, iron and spice notes. Best from 2022 through 2035.

Lots of grilled meat, smoke and ripe fruit. Rich and decadent. Medium to full body, round and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Layered and juicy for the Clos des Mouches. Better after 2022.

The 2017 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches is showing beautifully from bottle, wafting from the glass with an inviting bouquet of ripe red berries, orange rind, warm spices and subtle hints of coniferous forest floor. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and beautifully harmonious, with the same suave structuring tannins that I identified from barrel, succulent acids and a long, fragrant finish. This is a Clos des Mouches that positively caresses the palate, and it will offer a broad drinking window.

This ripe wine has weight and richness while maintaining balancing freshness. Citrus flavors are already integrated with spice from wood aging to give a full, delicious and ready-todrink wine. Dreyfus, Ashby & Co.
