Why We're Buying
Domaine René Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Ampodium goes big. It opens with an explosive bouquet of black fruit and licorice that transitions into firm tannins and a solid body. The touch of minerality rounds out the impressive flavor profile. Give this red wine a decade or so of aging to unlock the remaining complexity.
Critics Scores
Jeb Dunnuck
Beautifully perfumed, with loads of black raspberries, gamey meats, truffle, and exotic spice, the 2017 Côte Rôtie Ampodium is medium to full-bodied, with a layered textured, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This brilliant Côte Rôtie will benefit from short-term cellaring and cruise for a decade.
Vinous
Deep, brilliant violet. A mineral-tinged bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, peony and licorice, and a peppery flourish builds as the wine opens up. Shows impressive energy on the palate, offering juicy boysenberry and cherry compote flavors complemented by suggestions of spicecake and candied licorice. Sweet and seamless in texture, finishing on a lingering floral note, with impressive energy and smooth, harmonious tannins.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Hints of peppery spice and licorice add complexity to the blueberry and cassis-scented nose of the 2017 Côte Rôtie Ampodium. It's medium to full-bodied, with silky but firm tannins and a long, dusty finish. It should be approachable in a couple of years but drink gracefully for a decade and a half
