Why We're Buying

Guigal Hermitage Ex Voto Rouge lives up to the billing. The syrah, which retails over $300 per bottle, has been the winemaking gold standard in the Rhône Valley for decades. Wine critic Robert Parker has given E. Guigal Ermitage Ex-Voto three 100-point ratings, saying, "at the risk of sounding like a broken record, the 2010 Hermitage Ex Voto is as good as it gets." (Fun Fact: E. Guigal also produces a white version of Ex Voto, which Parker has given two perfect scores.)

Aged 36 months in new oak, the colossal 2015 Hermitage Ex Voto is up with the finest vintages of this cuvée to date and is certainly in the same ballpark as the 2009 and 2010. This deep, powerful, muscular Hermitage boasts a saturated purple color to go with its huge nose of crème de cassis, freshly crushed rocks, incense, charcoal, and spring flowers. Full-bodied, with good acidity and huge richness and density, it requires 5-7 years of cellaring and should drink well for 40+ years.

Surprisingly forward, the 2015 Hermitage Ex Voto is nevertheless a powerful, concentrated wine that will reward further cellaring. Full-bodied and rich, it reveals layers of spicy, meaty complexity, red berry fruit and a long, silky finish redolent of Christmas spices. I would not be surprised to see it gain weight and structure prior to its projected release in 2019.
