Why We're Buying

M. Chapoutier Ermitage De l'Oree is the estate’s most popular marsanne wine. The white wine, which features 100 marsanne grapes, is composed only of Hermitage’s finest fruits. The result is an exuberant, nearly tropical offering with an invigorating sorbet-esque finish. Dating back to 1994, wine critic Robert Parker has never given M. Chapoutier Ermitage De l'Oree lower than a 98-point rating.

This is creamy-edged, but with a racy spine, brightness and energy, showing floral lift amid a mix of white peach, white nectarine and mango flavors. The long finish is threaded with chamomile and verbena notes. A beauty. Drink now through 2035

Classy hints of pencil shavings accent the pear, nectarine and melon fruit in the full-bodied, voluptuous 2018 Ermitage de l'Orée. Despite the wine's ample richness and weight, it's surprisingly fresh and zesty, with hints of citrus zest and brine lingering on the finish. (JC)

Leading off the single vineyard Hermitage whites, the 2018 Ermitage De L’Orée is all Marsanne, from the Les Murets lieu-dit, brought up mostly in used demi-muids. Orange blossom, crushed citrus, spice box, white flowers, beautiful minerality, and vivid charcoal notes emerge from the glass of this beautiful, concentrated, opulent Hermitage, which has a stacked mid-palate and a level of structure fitting for a red wine. It's a brilliant wine that's going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for 20+.

This has weight but perhaps not quite the depth of some more recent vintages of de l'Orée, however it does have a little more juice with a good sense of freshness and length even if the acidity is low. A little more floral in style than most recent vintages with balanced alcohol. From 70-year-old vines from the lieu-dit Les Murets. All matured in demi muid with 15 new oak. Drinking Window 2022 - 2030. (MW)
