The 2006 100 Sangiovese is a bright and tonic wine that is heavily marked by aromas of bruised apple and pungent overtones that leave little room for the forest berry, cola and licorice that lurk in the distant background. The wine opens to a deep, dark color embedded with bright highlights of ruby and garnet. Its long finish feels silky and polished with a finely-tuned point of acidity that adds to the liveliness of the palate. There is the possibility that the mouthfeel will flesh out further with bottle aging, but I dont see the volatility lifting. Drink: 2015-2025.

The 2006 Toscana Sangiovese is the last release from Soldera in this great vintage. A dark, brooding wine, the 2006 needs considerable time to open up. Black cherries, cloves, leather, underbrush and licorice burst from the glass in a huge, powerful wine that is slow to fully reveal itself. A second bottle, tasted a few months later, possesses the most extraordinary perfume possible, breathtaking fruit and exceptional overall balance. A little more time in bottle has worked wonders. As the estate's fans know, the Soldera wines are bottled cask by cask. The Sangiovese is the third cask from the 2006 vintage to be bottled and released at Case Basse. Because of the later release, the 2006 spent more time in barrel (64 months) than the two Brunellos. The volatile acidity, once prominent in this wine, has begun to integrate. I have seen this before with Soldera wines. For example, the 1999 Brunello was impossible to taste when it was first released. A decade later, my only regret was not having bought more. The recent evolution of the 2006 suggests it is on a similar path. Drink between 2018-2036
