Why We're Buying

Barbaresco doesn't get much better than this. Bruno Giacosa Albesani Santo Stefano is one of the most expensive and highest-rated wines from Piedmont. That's, in part, because the estate only releases this nebbiolo during the finest vintages. Between 2017 and 2021, this red wine appreciated 98.3.

Although a bit slender, the 1999 Barbaresco Santo Stefano is in great shape tonight. Still fresh and nicely delineated, the 1999 has also aged quite well. The 1999 has always been a slender, narrowly built wine, especially next to the surrounding vintages, but tonight it is quite expressive and absolutely delicious. I would not wait too long, as the 1999 will be much less pleasurable once the modest fruit starts to fade. This is without question the best and most expressive bottle of the 1999 I have had. (AG)

Medium amber-edged red. Subtly perfumed nose of cherry, redcurrant, dried flowers and camphor. Sweet, supple and refined; solidly structured, even a bit tough, for Barbaresco, but already very aromatic in the mouth. Much longer and more impressive on the back end than the Asili. (ST)

Leather, Asian spices and citrus peel, anise and dried cherries provide remarkable complexity and mouthfilling flavors without ever seeming overdone. Tannins cut short the finish, but they’re chewy and rich, and will support this wine’s growth for decades to come.

Ripe strawberry and hints of rose on the nose. Full-bodied, almost decadent, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. Still tight and in reserve. Give it time.
