Why We're Buying

In a world where bigger is better, Rivers-Marie dares to differ. The Sonoma Coast winery is the brainchild of Thomas Rivers Brown and Genevieve Marie Walsh, who opened the estate in 2002. Its iconic pinot noir, Gioia, is only available through a mailing list, with an annual distribution ranging between 60 and 600 cases. Recently, investors have taken note of this pinot noir, and the price vaulted 16.4 in 2020.

This is noticeably reduced and I would strongly recommend decanting it if you're going to try a bottle young. Otherwise there is good freshness and verve to the middle weight flavors that possess a suave and rounded mouth feel before culminating in a cool, dusty and firm finish that suggest that this will need, as well as reward, 6 to 8 years of cellaring.

Vinous

The 2013 Pinot Noir Gioia Vineyard has a distinctly floral/savory/citrus profile, with pretty aromatics that balance some of the intensity of the fruit. Dark cherries, plums, mint, dried herbs and crushed flowers wrap around the powerful finish.
