Christophe told me that there are 1½ barrels of the 2012 Musigny Grand Cru this year. The nose is hauntingly beautiful – not powerful, not ostentatious, but just extraordinarily pure and delineated, the mineral component emerging with time in the glass. After a couple of minutes there are subtle floral scents – dried rose petal that a neatly placed. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, astonishing purity and tension with a faultless finish that makes you wonder whether you should bother tasting Pinot Noir ever. This is heaven in a wine glass.

A beam of violet, black currant, blackberry, spice and mineral marks this intense yet airy red. Though not heavy, the intensity on the palate is impressive. Fans out on the complex finish like a feather floating on an updraft of air. Lacy, lilting and persistent, offering a minty aftertaste. Best from 2020 through 2040.

A pungent nose combines enough wood to notice with an explosively spicy array of very ripe dark berries, violets, lilac and exotic tea. The medium weight plus flavors are almost painfully intense with superb mid-palate concentration that helps to partially buffer the exceptionally firm, brooding and palate staining finish that goes on and on while brimming with minerality. This possesses knockout potential though note that if you should be lucky enough to obtain a bottle or two of this gem that plenty of patience will be required as it will not be an early drinker.

The 2012 Musigny is surprisingly voluptuous and explosive in this vintage, much of its shape coming from the 100 new French oak. A total turn-on, the 2012 flows across the palate with layers of expressive red-toned fruit, rose petals, mint and wild flowers. The 50 whole clusters are totally integrated. What stands out is the wine's breathtaking texture, long finish and exceptional overall balance.
