Why We're Buying

Ornellaia Bolgheri belongs on the Mt. Rushmore of Italian wines. It’s one of the original Super Tuscans, a style that transformed Italian wine into the powerhouse it is today. Ornellaia is picked during ideal conditions and uses only the finest fruit to ensure immaculate year-over-year quality. Today, the Bordeaux-style red blend easily commands a $300 price tag.

Wine Enthusiast

Deep and delicious, with an earth-driven nose that conveys quality. Chunky plum pervades the chewy, dark palate, which offers a gorgeous mouthfeel and admirable depth. Only on the finish do you get a slight hint of oak. Overall it’s entirely solid and very likable, but as good as it is, it’s not quite on the level of the ’98 or ’99, which were amazing.

Lots of currant and spice, with hints of fresh herb. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a pretty balance. Delicate finish. Slightly austere. Give it time. A slightly held-back style for Ornellaia. (JS)

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2000 Ornellaia (magnum) is a pretty, well-balanced offering with good concentration and complexity. The 2000 lacks some of the visceral thrill of top vintages, but it is an excellent choice for near-term drinking. In 2000 Ornellaia is 65 Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 Merlot and 5 Cabernet Franc. The wine spent 18 months in French oak (70 new) and was lightly fined prior to being bottled. (AG)

Nothing in particular stands out about the 2000 Ornellaia, instead the whole is clearly greater than the sum of its parts. This blend of 65 Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 Merlot and 5 Cabernet Franc is a seamless beauty, showing exceptional purity with notable length on the palate and no hard edges.
