Why We're Buying

The Sassicaia Bolgheri DOCG is created from nothing else but the highest quality, hand-picked fruit. The vines are old (some dating back to 1950) yet vigorous. The result is a transcendent wine that has defined the region and earned multiple 100-point ratings from critics. Wine Spectator even voted 2018 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia as its “Wine of the Year.”

There is also a little deposit in the glass betraying a wine that is ageing, with the colour and tannin just starting to soften. It is in here, in these older wines, that you start to really understand the quality of the Sassicaia tannins. The oak regime was more abundant in the 1990s than in recent vintages, and it is evident in a tarry edge, in the rich toast to the blackberry fruits meshed with cinnamon spicing. You can feel the power and potential of this wine, perfect to drink now but could still happily age another few decades.

Complex aromas of minerals, berries, tobacco and shells. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a succulent, refined aftertaste. A pretty Sass.

Very deep ruby to the rim. Musky aromas of dark plum, blackcurrant and tobacco leaf. Then juicy, intense and sharply delineated, with lovely lift to the flavors of dark berries, minerals and cedar. Wonderfully balanced wine: sound acids leave an impression of great clarity and cut and a fresh, lightweight mouth feel. Finishes with silky, suave, spreading tannins and a very intense, persistent saline/mineral element.
