Bonneau du Martray Vineyard: Terroir and Winemaking

bonneau-du-martray-4.jpg

The Grand Cru vineyards of Bonneau du Martray cover 11 hectares of land, lying in the lap of Corton hills where En Charlemagne meets Le Charlemagne.

It’s one of the rarest Burgundy Grand Cru vineyards that enjoys optimal sunlight and adequate ventilation. The vines thrive on a mix of clay and limestone soils.

Such a unique terroir creates desirable growing conditions for the red and white grapes and helps develop nuanced, age-worthy wines

The vinification involves light crushing followed by pressing the red or white grapes. The winemakers then move on to fermenting the juice in 30% new French oak barrels for about 12 months.

This is followed by a period of second racking to separate the wine from its lees. Later the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks for about six months.

The wines are then lightly filtered before being bottled for worldwide sale.

The Fascinating History of Bonneau du Martray

While the vineyards had been producing extraordinary wines since the reign of Emperor Charlemagne, the Domaine was officially founded by the Bonneau du Martray family after the 18th century French Revolution.

The estate and the vineyard have been under the proprietorship of several owners through the centuries.

In 1969, Jean le Bault de la Morinière took charge of Domaine Bonneau du Martray, replanting most vines and renovating the estate to exemplary Burgundian standards.

He passed the torch to his son Jean-Charles in 1994, who introduced several innovations for improved vinification. His endeavors helped the wines gain international recognition.

In 2017, Jean-Charles sold Domaine Bonneau du Martray to American business tycoon Stanley Kroenke. Stan Kroenke also owns Screaming Eagle, a winery based in Napa Valley.

Soon Stanley Kroenke appointed Thibault Jacquet as the estate manager of Domaine Bonneau du Martray.
