Was 2017 A Good Year For Flor de Pingus?

The 2017 vintage faced a few problems. Little rains in winter turned the soils dry, and the April frost further damaged the vine plantings. But with his biodynamic practices, Peter Sisseck, the winery founder, managed to pull through.

Here’s how.

The Flor de Pingus 2017 wine is sourced from the old vine plantings of the La Horra vineyard parcels in the Ribera del Duero appellation.

Peter Sisseck focuses on low yield to produce concentrated fruit.

The wine goes through malolactic fermentation, after which it is aged for 18 months in oak barrels to develop the expression of terroir. The winemaker uses barrique aging to polish the tannins (mostly old oak.)

This soft vinification gives the wine an extended elevage and preserves its juiciness.
