Weissburgunder: Origin and Production

Weissburgunder Grapes in Vineyard

Weissburgunder, translating to White Burgundian, reflects the grape’s probable origins in Burgundy, France.

The grape is a mutation of Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), which itself is a mutation of Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir). Pinot Gris is a white wine grape, while Pinot Noir is a red wine grape.

Although Weissburgunder’s origin is attributed to Burgundy, very little is planted in the region today. The top producer of the grape is Germany, followed by Italy and Austria.

Weissburgunder grows in almost all of Germany's 13 wine regions but is most commonly found growing in the warm, dry southern regions of Baden, Rheinhessen, and the Pfalz. The Nahe region has also seen an increase in the grape’s plantings.

Weissburgunder also grows in other wine countries like Argentina, Slovakia, and the US.

Weissburgunder Wine: Tasting Notes and Characteristics

Weissburgunder Wine

The grape can produce full-bodied wine, light and crisp wine, sparkling wine, and even dessert wine

German Weissburgunder wine tends to be a yellow-green to golden yellow, with fresh acidity and a light to medium body. It offers a bouquet of orchard and stone fruit with delicate fruit and spice flavors.

Every bottle of Weissburgunder is unique because the grape reflects the terroir it’s grown in. A bottle of Weissburgunder from Mosel is light with a generous minerality, while Baden’s Weissburgunder is bolder and brighter.

Austrian Weißburgunder has a very similar perfume to Chardonnay. Structurally, however, Austrian Weißburgunder is lighter and more elegant with palatable acidity.

Below, we take a brief look at Weissburgunder winemaking and viticulture.

Weissburgunder Winemaking and Viticulture

Weissburgunder Vineyard

Weissburgunder prefers loam and limestone soils and ripens quite late.

On the vine, Weissburgunder is more prone to Botrytis, given the rise of organic viticulture since the winemaker cannot use artificial herbicides or pesticides. Additionally, Weissburgunder grows in small, compact bunches, allowing disease to spread easier.

Given Weissburgunder’s similarities to Chardonnay, the winery may vinify it similarly, using barrel fermentation, new oak, and malolactic fermentation

The grape is also used in sparkling wine cuvées, usually with Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Noir.

In Canada, Weissburgunder is often used to make quality ice wine. In fact, Canada’s Okanagan Valley Pinot Blanc wine is the region’s signature wine.
