Tradition meets modernity at Château La Fleur de Boüard. The Right Bank wine estate uses state-of-the-art winemaking techniques to bring merlot-dominant cuvées to life. While the grand vin is the star attraction, don't sleep on its third wine, Le Plus de La Fleur, which earned a 99-point ranking from wine critic Robert Parker during its 2000 debut.

At present, this estate is the reference point for high quality wines from Lalande de Pomerol. The basic cuvee from proprietor Hubert de Bouard and his wife Corinne, the 2006 La Fleur de Bouard is composed of 80 Merlot, 15 Cabernet Franc, and 5 Cabernet Sauvignon. Sensationally rich, with abundant quantities of blue and black fruits, spring flowers, graphite, licorice, and hints of espresso roast as well as toasty oak, it is supple enough to be drunk now, or cellared for a decade.

Very pretty blackberry, dark chocolate and blueberry aromas follow through to a full body, with wonderfully integrated tannins and a long, refined finish. Fine and polished. Best from 2011 through 2015.

Barrel sample. Owned by Hubert de Bouärd of Château Angélus, this is an example of what can be done in the lesser appellations if money is no object. It is smooth, ripe, with new wood but not too much, powered by top quality, densely dry tannins.
