How long does Champagne last opened?

Opened bottles of both vintage and non vintage Champagnes can last up to 3-5 days.

However, the life of an opened bottle of wine also depends on how you store it. Discover how to store an opened bottle of Champagne, how to keep your leftover Champagne fresh, and how to know if your sparkling bubbly has turned flat.

How Long Does Uncorked Champagne Last?

A fine vintage Champagne can last up to 5 days if you cork the wine bottle and store it properly.

However, an uncorked Champagne won’t last long.

So, if you’re planning to drink your leftover Champagne, keep the opening covered with plastic wrap or a cork and drink the sparkling wine within 2-3 days.

Also, any other sparkling wine wouldn’t last as long as Champagne. So, it’s best to finish your Cava or Prosecco wine within three days of popping the cork (even if your Cava has been closed with a cork.)

How To Keep An Open Bottle Of Champagne Fresh

Here are some wine storage ideas to store Champagne properly:

  • Use a Champagne stopper (or Champagne sealer): A Champagne stopper will keep your wine bubbly fresh by preventing the gas from escaping. If you don’t have a wine stopper, go for a synthetic cork or regular wine cork for storing Champagne.
  • Use a wine fridge: A wine fridge is not only suitable for an unopened bottle of a fine vintage. It will also keep the taste intact since a cooler temperature slows down the release of CO2, keeping your wine bubbly.

If you don’t have a wine fridge, you can also go for your regular fridge.

Serving tip: Vintage Champagne should be served cool. So, place the unopened Champagne in an ice bucket 30-40 minutes before serving.

Can You Freeze Leftover Champagne?

You can also freeze your leftover non vintage Champagne (or any other sparkling wine) to use later in a delicious cocktail!

This way, you can have your Champagne last even up to 6 months.

Just pour the wine into an ice cube tray and pop it into the freezer. Drop the sparkling wine cubes into your cocktails whenever you want.

How To Know If Your Champagne Has Gone Bad

Here are a few ways to know if your brilliant sparkling wine has gone flat.

  • Color: A flat Champagne will have a deep yellow or golden color.
  • Fizz: An old Champagne will have no fizz.
  • Aroma: A good Champagne has seductive fruity aromas, while a bad Champagne has a vinegar scent.
  • Taste: A bad Champagne will have a sour taste.

Although a flat Champagne is safe to drink, the vintage bottle won’t have the best flavor.

So, if you’re not planning to drink your opened Champagne wine within a few days, it is best to keep the cork on for your vintage or non-vintage bubbly.

A corked, unopened vintage Champagne bottle can last for at least 3-7 years compared to 3-4 years of a non vintage Champagne.

Enjoy A Fancy Vintage Champagne (and Store it Well, Long-Term!)

Your fine vintage bubbly deserves to be drunk at its best. So, try to drink your vintage or non vintage Champagne within 3-5 days of popping the cork.

Recork the opened wine to keep the fizz and taste intact.

Also, vintage Champagne makes a brilliant addition to your wine cellar. You have to make sure it is stored impeccably well too.
