How Is Lambrusco Rose Made?

lambrusco-rose-3.jpg

Lambrusco wines are made from Lambrusco grape varieties grown in the vineyard plots of the Emilia Romagna region of central Italy. Some wines may also have Pinot Nero grapes.

To create the typical bright pink color, the Lambrusco grape juice is macerated with the skins of select grapes for a couple of hours. The juice is filtered and then fermented to produce the base wine.

Italian Lambrusco Rose can be created using the following methods:

A. The Traditional Method

Sugar and yeast are bottles with the base wine for the second fermentation to produce the bubbles. After the secondary fermentation, the wines are aged on the lees, disgorged, and dosed.

The winemaker Fabio Lini produces Lambrusco and other Lini wines using both the traditional and Charmat method.

B. The Ancestral Method

The base wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation in cement vats or stainless steel tanks and then secondary fermentation in bottles. The final wine is not filtered and has minimal added sulfites.

The Bergianti winery uses the ancestral method to produce Lambrusco Rose wine.

C. Charmat Method

After the first fermentation, the base wine is added to pressurized steel tanks with sugar and yeast for the second fermentation process. The wines are then filtered, dosed, and bottled without aging.

Riunite Lambrusco is made using this method.
