2009 penfolds, bin 798 rwt shiraz, barossa valley
Why We're Buying
Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz is a powerful, rich, and intense wine that takes after Penfolds Grange. It elaborates on the hallmark characteristics, carving its own muscular and assertive image in the process. In 2018, Dan Murphy's Wine Panel wrote, "Our wine panel, in unison, exclaimed, "Wow!" on nosing this wine. We were instantly captivated by its brooding darkness...Silky smooth and without a hair out of place, this is the premier wine of the 2020 Penfolds release."

Vinous
Opaque violet color. Potent, spice-accented aromas of dark berry compote, cola, and potpourri, with a vanilla nuance gaining strength with air. Fleshy, palate-staining dark berry flavors show excellent depth and definition, with spicecake and candied violet notes adding complexity. Weighty, sweet and powerful on a finish that features floral and star anise elements.
Wine Enthusiast
RWT (unromantically derived from “Red Wine Trial”) is 100 Barossa Valley Shiraz, aged in 100 French oak. In some vintages, like this one, the combination is incredibly sumptuous, offering layers of blueberry and blackberry fruit intermingled elegantly with hints of French vanilla. It's long, subtle and complex on the finish—a stunning effort. It's approachable now, but should age well through 2030 or so.
