Why We're Buying

Château Durfort-Vivens gets better with time. In fact, it's the only Bordeaux wine estate to jump from a fifth-growth to a second-growth classification ever. The Margaux property produces a red blend that changes based on the vintage, making each year's production unique.

Aromas of redcurrants, flowers and cedar with an air of freshness. This has a very impressively composed and structured impression with attractive, raw appeal to the tannins and a core of mainly red-berry flavors. The acidity is vibrant. Very fresh and sustained flavors at the finish. Crushed cement and stone. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Firmly tannic, but also rich in ripe black-fruit tones, this is going to be a fine wine as it develops. The pure berry flavors shine through the structure and acidity. Drink from 2024.

The 2017 Durfort-Vivens is fabulous, not to mention one of the under the radar gems of the year. Rich and explosive in feel, the 2017 possesses tremendous intensity in every direction. Sweet floral notes, cedar, mint and spice add shades of nuance as this potent, vertically built Margaux opens up in the glass. In 2017, severe frost took with it 35 of the production. The fruit that survived produced an epic, marvelously rich Durfort-Vivens.

There's impressive depth to the cassis fruits here, with the same amount of Cabernet as in 2015 (although 2016 was even higher, at 94). The vines are up to 60 years old and are planted on clay-sand-gravels along with some deeper gravel soils. There is a beautiful balance in this wine, showing great persistency but not shouting, and the fruit has a clear line of sight. Very low sulphur, expected to be 55ppm. 60 new oak. Biodynamic
