Why We're Buying
The Roagna portfolio is headlined by Barbaresco Crichët Pajé cuvée, one of the most expensive wines in Italy. The nebbiolo ages for eight years before its release, capturing the full expression of the grapes. The result: an internationally acclaimed wine that costs more than $800 per bottle, a price that's almost doubled from 2017 to 2021.
Critics Scores
Vinous
The 2012 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is tight and not especially expressive today. In this vintage, the Crichët Pajè is a bit more floral and lighter in structure than it can be. Imagine Burgundy with Nebbiolo acids and tannins. Among other things, that means the 2012 will drink well with minimal cellaring, in relative terms for this bottling. Despite its reticence, the 2012 is also restrained and so nuanced. I can't wait to see how it develops in bottle.
Wine Spectator
This is mellowing and approachable revealing fading cherry and plum fruit framed by leather earth iron and wild herb notes. Opulent and succulent backed by dense refined tannins with the structure lifting the flavors and focusing the lingering finish.
