Why We're Buying

Roagna may be the master of Barbaresco, but the estate is far from a one-trick pony. La Pira is an extensively aged Barolo that ranks among the most expensive red wines from the appellation. The wine is not made in large quantities, meaning that the scarcity will continue to drive up the price.

Wine Spectator

A fresh-tasting style, boasting cherry, licorice and leather flavors, accented by eucalyptus and tar hints. Balanced and approachable now, yet should integrate more fully in the next two to three years. Drink now through 2033. 784 cases made.

Vinous

The 2012 Barolo Pira is deep, dense and voluptuous, especially for the vintage. There is plenty of Roagna structure, but the tannins are nearly buried by the sheer density of the fruit. Sweet herbs, tobacco, underbrush, menthol and licorice give the Pira a wild, unrestrained side that I personally find hugely appealing. If there is one wine readers should not miss in this set of new releases, the 2012 Pira is it. What a wine!
