The Burgundy 2019 Vintage Report

The Burgundy 2019 growing season started off with many challenges, but overall, it was quite an excellent vintage.

The winter was dry, and there was a shortage of water during the growing season. Fortunately, the old Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines with deep root systems survived these conditions.

Temperatures rose around March, which helped the vine plantings to flower earlier than usual. However, grape growers encountered more problems when spring frost hit the vineyard sites around April.

The frost killed most of the young Chardonnay vine plants, especially in the lower parts of the Côte de Beaune.

So, almost every producer lost a large portion of the grapes at the beginning of the growing season.

Temperatures rose again in summer, but the lack of rain caused further stress on the vines. Because of these challenges, most growers harvested their grapes late - around mid to late-September.

The harvest was low, but most of the grapes were healthy, concentrated, acidic, fresh, and had high sugar levels.

The Burgundy 2019 Wine Characteristics

Here are the characteristics of the Burgundy En Primeur 2019 wines:

Red Wines

The 2019 red Burgundy En Primeur wines display excellent freshness and high acidity.

Wine critics like Jancis Robinson also praised the reds for their fine-grained tannin content, phenolic ripeness, and remarkable concentration.

White Wines

The Burgundy En Primeur 2019 white wine styles are typically characterized by delightful freshness, richness, and white fruit notes.

Compared to the other Burgundy whites produced in recent years, these wines boast more acidity and plenty of ripe fruit flavors.

Besides, this vintage was characterized by several other noteworthy factors:

  • Old vines: Old vines, with their extensive root systems, managed to reach for water and nutrients deep underground. These grapes brought ripeness to the wines (as they hadn’t suffered from hydric stress.)
  • Organic & biodynamic farming: Although the 2019 growing season was challenging, organic and biodynamic farming techniques helped grow the healthiest vines.
  • Tier-2 and 3 wines stood out as well: Burgundy’s tier-2 and 3 producers also made remarkable wines in 2019. This included producers from Pommard, Cote de Beaune, and Cote de Nuits.

The Burgundy 2019 wines have a great aging potential - thanks to their high acidity levels. The finest reds can age for 50+ years, while the whites can last for up to 30 years.
