Chateau Latour Martillac: Terroir, Winemaking

Chateau Latour Martillac’s 50-hectare vineyard is planted with several red and white grape varieties. While 40 hectares of this vineyard are reserved for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grapes, 10 hectares are devoted to Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

The white grapes are grown on clay and limestone soils near the Garonne river, benefiting from the region’s cooler micro-climate.

In contrast, the red grapes are planted on the gravel slopes of the Martillac plateau.

Once harvested, the white grapes are pressed in whole clusters, vinified in oak barrels, and the wine is then aged on lees. 

Meanwhile, the red grapes undergo vinification in stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. Red wines are aged in French oak barrels for 16-18 months.

A Brief History Of Chateau Latour Martillac

In 1871, the Château Latour Martillac estate caught the attention of Edouard Kressmann, a German wine merchant in Bordeaux. He was enchanted by the outstanding quality of the white grapes grown there and began working extensively in the Latour Martillac vineyards.

Alfred Kressmann, Edouard’s eldest son, acquired the winery in 1930 and added Cabernet Sauvignon to the vineyards without touching the oldest plots. 

Their 1934 vintage red wine was served at the coronation of King George V.

Alfred was succeeded by his son, Jean Kressmann, who took the winery to new heights. Today, the winery is owned and managed by Jean’s children.
