The Liger Belair family settled in Vosne-Romanee when Louis Liger Belair acquired the Château de Vosne Romanée in 1815. 

Strict inheritance laws in France forced the family to sell their holdings in prestigious appellations like La Tâche, La Grande Rue, and St Georges.

Comte Michel, Louis Michels grandfather, repurchased the La Romanée and Les Chaumes vineyards to keep them in family hands.

Comte Liger Belair Vineyards & Winemaking

The fruit for Comte Liger Belair wines are primarily sourced from these five vineyards:

• La Colombière: Located at the foot of the Vosne Romanee castle, this plot has clay and limestone soils and 60-year-old vines.
• Clos Du Château Monopole: The vines are planted on rocky limestone soils and produce around 325 cases of wine annually.
• Les Chaumes: The vines of this 1er Cru enjoy clay soils.
• Aux Reignots: The vines are organically farmed and enjoy sandy limestone soils.
• La Romanée Grand Cru Monopole: Situated on a gentle slope above La Romanée Conti, this vineyard has limestone and clay soils covered with a layer of brown silt.

Each parcel is harvested in a single day before the grapes are sulphited and cooled to below 15oC. 

The winemakers leave the grapes until they begin to ferment naturally, without any added yeasts. Fermentation takes place in vats for around 10 days until the grapes are pressed and clarified.

Finally, the wines age in new oak barrels for 10-18 months.
