Now, let’s move on to discover more about Ferrari’s mountainside vineyards.

Ferrari Champagne: Viticulture And Winemaking

ferrari-champagne-9.jpg

Located in the Trentino region of Northern Italy, these mountainside vineyards are well-suited to the production of elegant sparkling wines.

The Ferrari vineyards are among the first Italian vineyards with substantial plantings of Chardonnay grapes. They also grow other Champagne grapes like Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Blanc.

The winery uses the Méthode Champenoise (or the “Traditional Method”) to craft its wines.

After harvest, the grape bunches are pressed and undergo alcoholic fermentation.

The base wine is then bottled with sugar and yeast for secondary fermentation, giving the sparkling wine its signature bubbles.

The wine bottle is gently rotated every day for 2-10 years to help the sediment (lees) settle at the bottleneck.

Finally, the sediment is removed, and still wine is added to replace the extracted lees. The sparkling wine is now ready for final bottling and corkage.

The Ferrari winery also has a rich history of producing quality sparkling wine. As the saying goes, “the Italian art of making Ferrari wines can’t be learned; it has to be cultivated.”

A Brief History Of Ferrari

ferrari-champagne-10.jpg

The Ferrari winery was created in 1902 by Giulio Ferrari when he saw the potential of Chardonnay grapes and the Trentino region. He decided to become a sparkling wine producer in Italy using the same method as French Champagne.

With no heir, Guilo Ferrari decided to pass the Ferrari name onto Bruno Lunelli in 1952, who owned a wine shop in Trento.

After Bruno, the estate passed over to his children. Today, the Lunelli group consists of Matteo Lunelli, Camilla Lunelli, Alessandro Lunelli, and Marcello Lunelli.

The Lunelli family has ramped up wine production and won several accolades.

In 2021, Tom Stevenson (creator of the Sparkling Wine World Championship) revealed that Ferrari Trento won “Sparkling Wine Producer Of The Year.”

The same year also marked Ferrari wines becoming the official toast of Formula One.
