How to Store Dom Perignon Safely (4 Key Factors & Tips)

by Hunter Robillard

Been saving up a bottle of Dom Perignon Brut but concerned that it’ll lose its fizz before time?

Don’t worry.

In this article, we’ll guide you on how to store Dom Perignon safely and keep the acidity and complex fruit flavors intact for the palate.

How to Store Dom Perignon Champagne at Optimal Conditions

Here are the four main things to keep your Dom Perignon vintage drink-worthy:

1. Right Temperature

Champagne, like most wines, is fickle. Too high a temperature and it ages too fast, likely damaging the delicate flavors. Too cold, and development slows, preventing the vintage wine from taking on more complex notes.

To help your Dom Perignon maintain its quality, store in a cool place between 45 - 65°F (7 - 18°C) and ensure that the temperature stays as constant as possible.

2. Stay Away From Light

Light prevents wine from aging well. Keep your Dom Perignon in a cool, dark place so its expressions of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape will keep evolving. A cellar would be perfect for these Champagne wines.

3. Maintain the Right Humidity

Low humidity can dry out the cork — transforming the taste in your vintage or non vintage Champagne bottle. So, ensure humidity is above 70% and, if possible, lay the bottles on their side.

Use a wooden wine rack over metal if you can, as it’ll help control humidity in your cellar and is less likely to damage bottles or labels.

4. Remember that It’s Pressurized

There’s about 6-8 bars of pressure in your bottle of Dom Perignon, so remember to handle it with care. Never saber a bottle when opening (that’s using a sword to take off the cork and a bit of the bottle top).

Tips for Champagne Storage

If you don’t own a cellar, you could consider a wine locker in a professional facility to age your Dom Perignon vintage.

If you don’t plan to age your unopened , a dark storage space that meets the temperature, light, and humidity conditions (like a basement) may work. You may have to move your Champagne bottles around with changing seasons.

A fridge could serve as storage for a week to two months with the right conditions, but no longer. Make sure your wine fridge isn’t used often — you don’t want the taste of toasted brioche and light pineapple to change.

And if you have an opened Champagne bottle, use a Champagne sealer to help preserve the fruit taste in the leftover Champagne.

How Long Can I Store Dom Perignon Champagne?

Dom Perignon is a vintage Champagne and lasts longer than most. While you can open yours immediately after purchase, an unopened bottle can keep up to 7-10 years after that, and sometimes longer!

Here’s an interesting fact: Dom Perignon has 3 peak stages of maturity; the first, called “P1,” is around 9 years after the vintage, the second “P2” after 20 years, and the third “P3” at 30-40 years. It’s never released until it reaches at least one peak.

How Can I Tell My Dom Perignon Has Expired?

If your Dom Perignon Oenotheque or Brut Champagne has lost its fizz, or there’s a change in the smell, appearance, or flavor, you can be sure that it’s gone bad. Use your instincts.

Keeping Your Dom Perignon Drink-Worthy

A bubbly that’s lost its sparkle and luminous sweetness is no fun — more so if it’s a precious vintage bottle of Champagne Dom Perignon. So, make sure your storage conditions are up to par.
