Louis Roederer Brut Premier: Taste and Characteristics

Louis Roederer Brut Premier

This NV Champagne by the Louis Roederer Champagne House is a blend of several vintage Champagnes made from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes.

It is a fully mature wine, opening with an impressive bouquet of juicy Meyer lemon, lime zest, crisp yellow orchard fruit, hazelnut, and brioche. The wine presents a smooth palate of subtle lemon curd and pink berry flavor. The finish is exquisite with racy acids, toasty lees (thanks to cask aging), and mineral notes.

Moreover, its energetic citrus (mostly lemon) and orchard fruit flavors will become more nuanced with bottle age.

This complex wine has charmed critics, earning a score of 92 points from prestigious magazines like Wine Enthusiast, Wine Advocate, and Wine Spectator and 90 points from Wine & Spirits.

How To Serve Louis Roederer Champagne

Serve this beautiful bubbly chilled at 46°F-50°F (8°C-10°C) in Champagne flutes.

Its fruity flavor will pair perfectly with veal, pork, braised chicken in red wine, shellfish, and boeuf bourguignon. You could also enjoy it with mild and soft cheese.

How Is Louis Roederer Brut Premier Made?

Louis Roederer

The Brut Premier is a Roederer nonvintage masterpiece crafted to perfection by the head winemaker Jean Baptiste Lécaillon.

However, the idea came from Léon Olry Roederer (an heir of Champagne Louis Roederer), who created the high-quality multi vintage blend to compensate for the lack of vintage harvests.

Today, Brut Premier is an assemblage with a part of the wine coming from the reserve wine collection. This Louis Roederer collection, called the “Réserve Perpetuelle,” is an assemblage of each year’s vintage wine in a stainless steel vat.

Brut Premier typically incorporates a blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, and 20% Pinot Meunier wines from Premier and Grand cru fruit.

Here’s how it’s made:

  • The base wine is added with 25% reserve wines before undergoing partial malolactic fermentation in oak casks.
  • The assemblage is then aged for three years in the Louis Roederer cellar and left for a minimum of 6 months after disgorgement (removal of dead yeast cells.)
  • The wine is dosed with 10g/L-11g/L of sugar.

In some instances, a blend of 42% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, and 18% Meunier has been used to make the wine. However, the process remained relatively the same.

The wine is matured in oak casks while undergoing 30% malolactic fermentation.
