Pappy Van Winkle Price in 2026: Retail, Lottery and Resale Values

The Pappy Van Winkle price at suggested retail for the 2026 release is $299.99 for the 15 Year, $399.99 for the 20 Year and $499.99 for the 23 Year. Few people pay that. On the secondary market, 2025 bottles traded at roughly $1,460, $1,990 and $2,870 in August 2026.

This guide covers all six Van Winkle bottles, what changed in the 2026 price increase, the real odds in state lotteries, how to check a bottle before you pay resale money, and why we don't treat Pappy as an investment.

Pappy Van Winkle price: key takeaways

  • Suggested retail went up in 2026. Five of six bottles rose, from 11% (20 Year) to 30% (Family Reserve Rye). Only the 23 Year held at $499.99.
  • Resale runs 2.6 to 5.7 times the new retail price. The older the bottle, the bigger the multiple, based on The Collective's August 2026 values.
  • Lotteries are the realistic retail route, and the odds are long. Virginia ABC drew 8 bottles of 23 Year against 57,702 entries in February 2026.
  • Fakes are a real risk. The Van Winkle family and Buffalo Trace say to buy only from licensed sellers.
  • Our view: Pappy is a wonderful bottle to win and drink. As an asset, it is hard to sell legally and its resale prices have been flat to falling.

How much is Pappy Van Winkle at retail and on the secondary market?

Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery publishes a suggested retail price (MSRP) for each bottle on its own site. Resale figures are estimates from recorded collector trades, shown with a 90-day delay. Multiples are our calculation.

Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year and Special Reserve 12 Year

These are the entry points. The 10 Year is bottled close to barrel strength at 107 proof, while the 12 Year, sold as "Lot B," comes in at 90.4 proof. (Source: Old Rip Van Winkle)

Both resell for around $625 to $645, so the cheaper 10 Year carries the bigger multiple. In Virginia's February 2026 lottery, the 12 Year was the easiest Van Winkle to win, with 1,035 bottles on offer. (Source: Virginia ABC)

Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year

The rye took the steepest increase in 2026, from $229.99 to $299.99, and it has the smallest resale premium in the range. The Collective's $785 value is a 90-day average; the other bottles use 30-day averages. (Source: The Collective)

Bourbon Culture's guide from November 2025 put the rye at $1,050, so it has also lost the most ground on resale. (Source: Bourbon Culture, 2026 Bourbon Brown Book)

Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year

The 15 Year is the bottle most people picture when they say "Pappy." It is a 107-proof wheated bourbon, and Whisky Auctioneer notes it replaced an Old Rip Van Winkle 15 Year in 2004. (Source: Whisky Auctioneer, Pappy Van Winkle)

Its suggested retail jumped 25% to $299.99, the same as the rye, yet it resells for nearly twice as much.

Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year

The 20 Year was the first Pappy age statement, and it put the brand on the map with a score of 99 from the Beverage Testing Institute in 1996. (Source: Whisky Auctioneer)

Whisky Auctioneer adds that its legend grew after the 2013 theft of 65 three-bottle cases. At $1,985 on resale, it sits at five times its new $399.99 retail price.

Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year

The oldest regular bottling, first released in 1998, and the only one whose price didn't change in 2026. (Source: Whisky Auctioneer) It has the highest multiple in the range at 5.7x. Values for the 2024 and 2025 bottles were almost identical in August 2026, at $2,860 and $2,867. (Source: The Collective)

What about Old Rip Van Winkle 25 Year?

The 25 Year was a one-time release in 2017: 11 barrels, 710 bottles, priced at $1,800 in a handmade glass decanter inside a box built from the barrel staves. (Source: The Spirits Business, February 2017)

With only seven recorded trades, The Collective's six-month average of $31,750 is a thin data point, but it is about 18 times the original price. (Source: The Collective)

Why did Pappy Van Winkle prices go up in 2026?

The brand didn't give a reason in its release announcement. It did note that neither the family nor Buffalo Trace controls what individual retailers charge. (Source: Van Winkle 2026 release announcement)

The new prices are already on state shelves. North Carolina's May 2026 list still had the 15 Year at $239.95; the November list has it at $299.95. The 10 Year went from $149.95 to $169.95 and the rye from $229.95 to $299.95. (Source: NC ABC, May 2026 price list) (Source: NC ABC, November 2026 price list)

Bourbon Culture's annual guide offers one explanation for the wider market: brands are raising retail prices to capture some of the secondary value themselves, while buyers are getting choosier. (Source: Bourbon Culture) If the full line-up resold at the August 2026 values, the six bottles would fetch about $8,365, against $1,869.94 at suggested retail.

Why is Pappy so expensive on the secondary market?

Supply is tiny relative to demand, and it can't be ramped up quickly. Every bottle is 10 to 23 years old, so this year's supply was set by barrels filled a decade or two ago.

Who makes it, and how much is there?

Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr. opened the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville in 1935. Since 2002, the family has made its whiskey at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, through a joint venture, under the family's guidelines. (Source: Buffalo Trace, Van Winkle)

The family and Buffalo Trace's master distiller pick the barrels for each release, which goes out through Sazerac's distribution network in limited quantities. (Source: 2026 release announcement)

How small are the allocations?

Virginia publishes bottle counts and entries for each lottery, which makes it the clearest public view of scarcity we have found.

Virginia ABC Van Winkle lottery, February 16–19, 2026
Bottle (2025 release) Price Bottles offered Entries Roughly one bottle per
Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year $149.99 245 59,899 244 entries
Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year $169.99 1,035 59,947 58 entries
Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year $229.99 84 58,396 695 entries
Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year $239.99 46 59,448 1,292 entries
Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year $359.99 118 58,187 493 entries
Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year $499.99 8 57,702 7,213 entries

Source: Virginia ABC, Lottery. The last column is our calculation. Each product is drawn separately, and Virginia ABC says odds depend only on entries and bottles available. (Source: Virginia ABC, Lottery FAQs)

Eight bottles of 23 Year for an entire state of adult residents is the whole story in one number. Notice also that the 15 Year was scarcer than the 20 Year in Virginia, even though the 20 Year resells for more.

Is the gap between retail and resale shrinking?

Slowly. Bourbon Culture marked every Van Winkle except the 20 Year as trending down in November 2025, and called them all "a slightly worse value" as retail rose and resale slipped. (Source: Bourbon Culture)

Its estimates then were within about 5% of The Collective's August 2026 values for the bourbons, though the rye was 25% lower by August. The two sources use different methods, so treat the comparison as a rough guide.

Older bottlings are a separate market. Whisky Auctioneer notes that most early Pappy was made with bourbon from the Stitzel-Weller distillery, which closed in 1992. (Source: Whisky Auctioneer) For how age and provenance affect value, see our guide to old whiskey bottle values.

How can you buy Pappy Van Winkle at retail price?

Mostly by luck. The family's own advice is to get to know your local liquor store, enter state and retailer raffles and lotteries, go to bourbon events, and follow its official social channels for release news. It also warns that special releases aren't sold on the Buffalo Trace campus. (Source: Old Rip Van Winkle, Finding Pappy)

Virginia ABC lottery

Virginia sells its Van Winkle allocation through an online lottery. Entry is open to residents aged 21 or older and to active-duty military stationed in Virginia and their spouses. Entry windows run at least three days, and there is no advantage to entering early. (Source: Virginia ABC, Lottery FAQs) Winners buy online and pick up in store with ID.

Pennsylvania PLCB lottery

Pennsylvania's January 2026 Van Winkle lottery offered 1,062 bottles, one bottle per winner and one entry per household per drawing. It priced the bottles below Virginia: $199.99 for the 15 Year, $319.99 for the 20 Year and $449.99 for the 23 Year. Only 32 bottles of 23 Year went to individual consumers. (Source: Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, January 2026)

Entrants need an FWGS.com account with billing details, and winners must collect in person. The PLCB also reminds winners that reselling alcohol without a license is prohibited under state law. (Source: PLCB)

North Carolina ABC stores

North Carolina's quarterly price list sets the shelf price for its ABC stores, and the November 2026 list has the full Van Winkle line within a few cents of suggested retail. (Source: NC ABC Commission) Finding a bottle on the shelf is another matter, so ask your local ABC board how it releases allocated bourbon.

Our Blanton's price guide covers the same state systems for a Buffalo Trace bourbon that is far easier to find.

How do you spot a fake Pappy Van Winkle?

The most common fake is a real empty bottle refilled with something cheaper. Buffalo Trace said as far back as 2017 that counterfeiters were also printing labels at home, and it backed the first successful prosecution over two fake bottles sold for $1,500. (Source: Buffalo Trace, October 2017 release) Before paying resale money, check these points:

  • Label and capsule match. A face label without a matching capsule in the right color is "a sure sign of fraud," according to the family. (Source: Buffalo Trace)
  • The foil is clean. Buffalo Trace's global brand director says perforations should be intact and the pull tab a little hard to separate. Heavy wrinkling, banding, misaligned foil or any printing on the foil signal tampering. (Source: Tasting Table interview with Buffalo Trace)
  • The lot code matches the claimed year. The lasered lot code shows when the bottle was produced. A "2023" bottle with a 2020 code is likely fake, though a matching code proves nothing on its own. (Source: Tasting Table)
  • The seller is licensed. A website offering to ship Pappy to a state that bans direct alcohol shipping is a red flag. (Source: Tasting Table)

If you think you have bought a fake, don't drink it. The family asks buyers to report it to the Better Business Bureau and their state attorney general, and to call their credit card company about fraud protection. (Source: 2026 release announcement)

Is Pappy Van Winkle a good investment?

For most people, no. A lottery win is a good deal. Buying at resale to hold for profit is a different bet, and the numbers don't favor it.

  • Selling it legally is hard. In many states, selling alcohol without a license is illegal, and Pennsylvania spells this out for lottery winners. Licensed auctions are the legitimate exit, and we compare them with private sales in our guide on how to sell a whiskey investment.
  • Resale prices have been flat to down. Bourbon Culture's November 2025 trends were mostly down, and our bourbon market trends piece explains why.
  • Retail is catching up. When the 15 Year's suggested retail rose by $60, the cushion between what lottery winners pay and what the bottle resells for got $60 thinner.
  • Fees and fakes eat returns. Auction commissions, shipping and authentication all come out of the spread, and a single fake wipes it out.

Pappy does have one thing going for it: liquidity among collectors. Bourbon Culture says Van Winkle bottles are still among the easiest to sell when priced reasonably. (Source: Bourbon Culture) That makes it a better collector's bottle than most, not a better investment.

The Vinovest view

Enter the lotteries, open the bottle with friends, and treat any win as a windfall. If you are building a whiskey collection for the long run, buy bottles you would be happy to drink.

If you want whiskey as an asset, we prefer casks to shelf bottles. On Vinovest, American whiskey starts at $1,750. We source, authenticate, insure and store the casks, and recommend holding 4 to 8+ years. (Source: Vinovest, Invest in Whiskey)

Casks carry risks too, and nothing here is a promise of returns. Our bourbon investment guide explains how casks and bottles compare.

Bottom line on Pappy Van Winkle price

At suggested retail, the 2026 Pappy Van Winkle line runs from $169.99 for the 10 Year to $499.99 for the 23 Year. Resale runs about 2.6 to 5.7 times higher. Enter your state's lottery, buy only from licensed sellers, and check any resale bottle carefully before you pay.
