The WhistlePig straight rye whiskey also boasts a tannic bite and a satisfying bourbon barrel finish.

On the nose, this straight rye American whiskey displays the aromas of mint, clove, and cinnamon with a charred oak note.

A 750ml bottle of this awarded rye whiskey is sold for $87.99, while a 50ml bottle costs around $7.99.

What’s the story behind the WhistlePig 10 Year Old whiskey?

It’s believed that whiskey makers discovered an aged rye whiskey stock by chance and rescued it from a hapless fate. They proceeded to age the small batch rye stock in new American oak barrels for 10 years before hand-bottling it.

And that’s how this famous whiskey came to be!

History of the WhistlePig Distillery and Its Whiskey-Making Techniques

Although the WhistlePig Farm Distillery was founded only 16 years ago, it’s become one of the most popular whiskey producers in the world.

Here’s a brief history of this distillery:

  • In 2007, Raj Peter Bhakta (an American entrepreneur) bought a dairy farm in Vermont and decided to open a whiskey distillery.
  • In 2008, Raj Peter Bhakta had a strange encounter while hiking in Colorado. During the incident, he was almost run over by a French cyclist who thought he had run into a “whistle pig.”

Never fully clarifying what a “whistle pig” is, Bhakta decided to use the name for his distillery, and the WhistlePig farm distillery was officially established.

  • Bhakta later teamed up with renowned master distiller Dave Pickerell, and they decided to focus on rye whisky production. Later, Dave Pickerell discovered a high quality 10 year aged Canadian rye whiskey stock. He then used the aged rye whiskey stock to blend Whistlepig whiskeys.
  • In 2015, WhistlePig owners opened an on-site distillery. They produced pot still blending whiskey using locally raised grain sourced from the best farms in North America. (Pot still whiskey is an Irish whiskey style made by combining malted and unmalted barley, and then distilling the drink in a pot still.)
  • Later, the distillery started using a “triple tier” method, where they grew their rye grains on the WhistlePig farm, distilled spirits, and then aged them using their own Vermont Oak casks.

Currently, WhistlePig’s master distiller sources blending whiskey from other distilleries. The WhistlePig Distillery also grows more than 200 acres of rye to produce its distilled spirits.

Is the WhistlePig 10 Year Old Whiskey Investment-Worthy?

The WhistlePig straight rye whiskey is affordable and has a superb taste. But it might not be worth investing in for the long term.

If you’re looking for collectible and expensive whiskey bottles, the WhistlePig Distillery has other related products that may interest you.

The finest WhistlePig whiskey bottles worth adding to your portfolio are:

  • Whistlepig 17 Year Old Single Barrel Rye #94 / The Boss Hog 7th Edition 3L: This 100 percent rye whiskey bottle sold for $500 when released in 2019. But the WhistlePig rye whiskey was auctioned for $5,961 online in August 2021 — a jaw-dropping 1,092% increase.
  • WhistlePig 13 Year Old The Boss Hog II: The Spirit of Mortimer, a 58.5-62% ABV whiskey (117-124 proof), was initially released in 2014 for $190. This coveted straight rye whiskey was sold at an auction in March 2021 for $4,054 — a 2,033% increase from its initial price.

Now, bear in mind that these WhistlePig whiskey bottles are rare and were produced in limited quantities. Also, these alcoholic beverages received great critical acclaim and are in high demand.

This means getting your hands on these bottles can be tricky.

But if you want to make your life easier, invest in whiskey casks instead of bottles.

Why?

You can purchase whiskey casks at a younger age and, therefore, at a much lower price. The whisky will only improve as it matures, and its price will increase.

Interesting fact: Over the last five years, the BC20 cask index reported average annual returns of 13.09%.
