Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Aux Malconsorts is bold, intense, and austere. The pinot noir comes from one of the premier cru vineyards in Vosne-Romanée, though many people consider it grand cru caliber. Wine critic Allen Meadows endorsed the 2016 vintage, saying, "This stunner is a classically styled Malconsorts that is made in a 'buy and forget you own it' style. *Don't Miss, Outstanding*" The red wine also appreciated 73.2 from 2017 to 2021.

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts has just a little less new oak than the Les Suchots this year. The aromatics are more backward and recalcitrant than the Les Suchots and demanded more coaxing from the glass. There is a sense of depth to the fruit, almost an opacity that suggests the fruit will only gradually open up. It was difficult wrenching your nose away from the glass! The palate is beautifully balanced with succulent fleshy tannin, voluminous in the mouth with immense concentration counterbalanced by a keen line of acidity. Very persistent in the mouth, this will be immense once in bottle. Cellar for as long as you can.

This too is notably ripe yet manages to remain wonderfully fresh with its super-spicy aromas of red currant, cherry, raspberry and lavender. There is terrific verve and power to the big-bodied, mineral-driven and concentrated flavors that deliver superb depth and length on the almost painfully intense finale. However despite all of the concentration and overt muscularity this very, very firmly structured effort remains faultlessly well-balanced though note well that this is going to require an extended snooze in a cool cellar. This is reference standard Malconsorts.
