Why We're Buying

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Les Suchots is on a one-way ticket to the moon. Between August 2017 and July 2021, the pinot noir nearly tripled in price. The red wine, which retails for $900+, is now one of the most sought-after offerings from Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots.

Unfurling to reveal aromas of dark berries, plums and spices mingled with rich soil tones and dark chocolate, Cathiard's 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is medium to full-bodied, broad and enveloping, with a generous core of fruit, velvety tannins and a long, pure finish.

In the same fashion as the En Orveaux reduction dominates but pretty spice elements escape the funk to suggest that when the nose cleans up this should be lovely. As is usually the case, the medium-bodied flavors offers more body and richness but not the same finesse or minerality while delivering equally good punch and power on the strikingly long finish. This beauty should be first-rate in time.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a gorgeous bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit and more sous-bois aromas than the En Orveaux; touches of sage and pressed flowers emerge with time, adding more and more complexity. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy red fruit and gentle grip in the mouth. Quite structured for a Les Suchots, with a stunning, lightly spiced, energetic finish that has more vivacity than it knows what to do with. Fabulous.

Les Suchots is the biggest Premier Cru in Vosne-Romanée and its soils are correspondingly diverse. The Cathiards' parcel is on deep clay soils above the cemetery and has produced a rich, plush, glossy wine with engaging sweetness and intensity, red and black fruit flavours, supporting acidity and expertly judged oak integration. Drinking Window 2024 - 2035.
