Investing in 2016 Joseph Drouhin Clos Des Mouches means investing in history. The vineyard at the southern end of the Beaune appellation was one of the first that Maurice Drouhin purchased in the 1920s. Nearly a century later, this pinot noir has retained the mythical stature that made it an international sensation. On the palate, 2016 Clos Des Mouches is deep, sweeping, and graceful. The medium body unleashes layers of sweet dark fruit, spice, coffee, cocoa, orange, and oak. Silky tannins blend harmoniously into the body, while notes of oyster shells punctuate the air. Anyone who gives this pinot noir a decade in the cellar will be richly rewarded. Joseph Drouhin doesn't just make one investment-worthy wine from Le Clos des Mouches. It makes two, a red and a white. A perfumed and spicy wine with ripe strawberries, smoke and chocolate. Full, very savory and intense. Long aftertaste with lots of perfume. Fine, creamy texture. Really spicy at the finish. Drink after 2022 and onwards.

The Drouhins' red version of the Clos des Mouches combines grapes from the high and low parts of the Premier Cru and is a blend of seven different micro cuvées. Fermented with 25 whole bunches and aged in 20 new wood, this is textured, refined and well balanced, with all the focus and freshness of one of Beaune's most special sites.

This too is quite deeply pitched with its ripe aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, spice, floral and soft oak scents. There is very good verve to the utterly delicious and slightly finer medium weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the balanced and harmonious finish. This isn't quite as complex as the Grèves though that may well change with time as the track record of this wine developing well is firmly established.
