What goes into making these beautiful Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines?

Aloxe Corton: Viticulture and Winemaking

aloxe-corton-3.jpg

The Aloxe Corton AOC in Côte de Beaune includes the Aloxe Corton and Ladoix-Serrigny communes situated on and near Corton Hill. Its terroir is perfect for cool climate grapes, like Pinot Noir.

The region has several Premiers Crus vineyards. It also includes two Grand Cru vineyards that partially overlap into its territory - Corton-Charlemagne and Corton Grands Crus.

More than 90% of the vine plantings in Aloxe Corton vineyards account for the Pinot Noir grape variety. The remaining vine plantings include white grapes like Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc.

What is the vinification process of these wines?

According to AOC regulations:

  • Red wines can incorporate up to 15% white grapes, including Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris, as accessory grapes. However, most Aloxe Corton red wines are solely made from the Pinot Noir grape variety.
  • White wines can contain both Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc white grapes.

For red wine, a producer generally uses destalked Pinot Noir grape bunches for alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels. After the fermentation process, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months.

For white wine, the Chardonnay grapes are whole-bunch pressed before alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels. The wine is aged in French oak barrels after fermentation for about 11 months.

Now, let’s look at the history of the region.

Aloxe Corton: A Brief History

aloxe-corton-4.jpg

According to legend, Emperor Charlemagne granted the Aloxe Corton Village lands to the Canons of the Collegiate Church of St. Andoche Saulieu in 775.

However, “Corton” was only added to the village’s name in the mid-19th century. It was a reference to the Corton Hill, which the region shares with the communes of Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny.

The region was finally designated as the Aloxe Corton appellation in 1938. But the Aloxe Corton vineyards were only classified later, in 1982, when a few of them were granted their Premier Cru status.

Today, it is home to around 14 Premiers Crus that produce some of the most delicious Burgundies. It also partly includes two Grand Cru AOCs that fall under its territory.
