A Quick Intro to Domaine Faiveley
Domaine Faiveley is situated in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy, France. The Domaine is one of the largest classified vineyard owners in Burgundy.
Most of its vineyards are located in prestigious Cru appellations like Cote Chalonnaise, Cote de Beaune, and Cote de Nuits. Domaine Faiveley also manages to make about 80% of its wines with grapes grown on it’s own vineyards.
The estate produces 54 different wines that include some of the finest Burgundy Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines.
So how did Domaine Faiveley become what it is today - a major wine producer that owns some of the best lands in the whole of Burgundy?

The History Behind Domaine Faiveley
Domaine Faiveley was established in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley under the name “Maison Joseph Faiveley.” Pierre was a shoemaker by profession, but his passion for wine grew into a full-fledged business by the 1840s and he devoted his time entirely to developing the Faiveley estate.
The property’s management was passed on to his nephew Joseph Faiveley who started trading wine with Northern Europe in the 1860s.
In 1873 Domaine Faiveley acquired the iconic Monopole Corton Clos des Cortons Grand Cru Vineyard. All their vineyard acquisitions reflected their commitment to maintaining the quality of Burgundy’s patrimony.
At the end of the 19th century, the Domaine’s vineyards were affected by the phylloxera disease, and the Faiveley family had to work hard to save the estate’s vines.
The economic crisis of the 1930s also hit the Domaine hard. The wine’s worth dropped significantly.
In 1934, Joseph Faiveley founded the wine brotherhood “Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.”
He also managed to lease some renowned vine parcels in Cote Chalonnaise. His son Guy Faiveley took over the Domaine in 1947 and managed to buy the rented vines in 1963.
Francois Faiveley followed in the footsteps of his forefathers. He joined the family business in 1976 and continued expanding the estate’s lands.
The Domaine is now in the hands of the seventh generation Faiveley family members Erwan Faiveley and his sister Eve who continue to acquire new vine plots.
Erwan joined in 2005 and introduced several modern winemaking methods, which we’ll look at a bit later.

Winemaking at Domaine Faiveley
During Francois’s time, many Domaine Faiveley wines were known for their extremely high tannin levels and tough character, which added to their aging potential.
As Erwan Faiveley is taking over the family business, he has been trying to incorporate some new techniques while preserving the estate’s traditional winemaking. With this, he aims to make Domaine Faiveley’s wines more approachable while they’re young.
The winemaking process includes:
- Harvesting: Teams of pickers go around the vineyards once the grapes reach their optimal ripeness levels. The grapes are sorted manually, and only the best clusters are selected.
- Fermentation: Once destemmed, the grapes are transferred into new wooden vats (for the finer wines) or stainless steel tanks. The cuvee ferments at low temperatures.
- Extraction: The grapes are pressed slowly to get the most out of their color, rich aroma, and supple tannins.
- Aging: The wine is then transferred to French oak barrels with a fine grain structure and mild toast. The wine ages between 12 to 18 months in their modernized 19th century cellars with regulated temperature.
