Domaine Arnoux Lachaux Vineyards and Viticulture

arnoux-lachaux-3.jpg

Arnoux Lachaux covers 14.5 hectares across seven different vineyards of old vine plantations (over 50 years on average) in Vosne Romanee and Nuits Saint Georges.

When it comes to vineyard management, Charles has been a vocal supporter of Lalou Bize Leroy (a legendary Bourgogne winemaker and owner of Domaine d'Auvenay and Domaine Leroy.)

Since taking over the estate, Charles has adopted several organic and biodynamic farming practices used by Lalou Bize Leroy. For example:

  • The shoots are trimmed to 1.8m (1.1m being the norm), allowing for a greater supply of nutrients to the vine (which results in more vigorously growing grape bunches.)
  • Vine plantations now stand at a high density of 20,000 vines per hectare, which results in fewer fruit bunches with a greater concentration of aromas, flavors, color, and tannins.

As a result, the harvest season at Arnoux Lachaux starts 7-10 days earlier than usual.

Winemaking At Domaine Arnoux Lachaux

arnoux-lachaux-4.jpg

Let’s take a closer look at the vinification process at Domaine Arnoux Lachaux:

  • Pressing: The grape juice is extracted with the help of a pneumatic press.
  • Fermentation: The winery uses 100% whole grape clusters for fermentation.
  • Aging: The wines are aged for 14 months in oak barrels. The winery has also reduced the use of new oak to 20% for the Premier Cru, 30% for the Grand Cru, and 10% for the village wines.
  • Bottling: The wines are bottled and corked using longer corks (54mm), which help slow down oxidation.

The recent vintages have around 12.5-13.5% ABV.

The History Behind Domaine Arnoux Lachaux

arnoux-lachaux-5.jpg

The Arnoux Lachaux estate was founded in 1858 by Charles Arnoux and Renée Salbreux. However, the winery only began bottling wine from its vineyards in the early 1950s.

Robert Arnoux (son of Charles Arnoux) managed the winery from 1957 until the 1990s.

In 1995, Florence Arnoux, the daughter of the late Robert Arnoux, and her husband Pascal Lachaux inherited the estate.

Around 2008, Charles Lachaux (son of Pascal Lachaux)  took over the estate and renamed it to Domaine Arnoux Lachaux (formerly Domaine Robert Arnoux).
