How Are These Irresistible Rose Wines Made?

Vineyard during fall foliage

Most Rose wines are made from red wine grape varieties like:

The Rose wine vinification process varies depending on the winemaker. Rose is usually produced using one of these four methods:

  • Leaving the skin on: The grape skin is left with the juice for a short time to impart the typical blush hue.
  • Pressing the skin and juice: The grape skin is pressed with the juice and removed immediately. This adds a light pink color to the wine.
  • Saignee process: Saignee is the process of bleeding off (removing) some of the red wine during the early stages of winemaking. The bled juice is then used in the production of elegant pink wine blends.
  • Blending: This is the process of blending red and white wine and is primarily used in Rose Champagne production.
