Here are the seven types of Champagne and their carb content per 5-ounce serving:

1. Brut Nature: It is the driest type of Champagne, which is ideal if you’re on a keto diet. A serving of this dry wine has less than 1 gram of sugar.

2. Extra Brut: This sparkling wine has very little added sugar and approximately 1 gram of carbs.

3. Brut: Though this is a dry sparkling wine, Brut Champagne has some sugar and about 1 to 1.5 grams of net carbs.

4. Extra Dry: This dry wine has some added sugar and a carb content of 2 to 2.5 grams.

5. Dry: Dry Champagne is a sweeter sparkling wine style with 3 to 6 grams of net carbs.  

6. Demi-Sec: This moderately sweet wine with a carb content of 6 to 8 grams is often served as a dessert wine.

7. Doux: This one’s a very sweet wine and contains 8 to 10 grams of net carbs per serving. This dessert wine isn’t a good choice if you’re on a keto diet.

How Is Champagne Made and How Does It Affect the Carb Content?

Like other wines, Champagne or sparkling wine is also made by pressing grapes, fermenting the juice, and converting the residual sugar to alcohol.

However, unlike still wine, Champagne goes through one extra stage - a secondary fermentation (during which the wine becomes fizzy) with additional yeast and dosage (cane or beet sugar solution.) During maturation, it is treated with more dosage to improve its flavor.

The sweetness of Champagne is determined by the dosage levels. If the winemaker reduces the dosage amount, the Champagne has low carb and sugar levels, making it the perfect drink if you’re in ketosis. However, if the dosage is higher, the Champagne will have higher residual sugar and carb levels.

Is Champagne Keto-friendly?

A ketogenic or keto diet consists of high-fat, moderate-protein, and carb-deficit (20 to 50 grams per day) food intake. If your body is in ketosis, it becomes necessary to monitor your carb and calorie consumption. 

The best Champagne picks for a keto diet are Brut Nature, Extra Brut,  Brut Champagne, and dry Champagne, which have fewer carbs than most alcoholic beverages. 

A single serving has a low carb content, but drinking Champagne in excessive amounts can quickly add up to your daily carb intake.  However, in moderation, this low carb wine is the ideal drink when following a keto diet.
