Emmanuel Rouget: Vineyards and Winemaking Practices

Emmanuel Rouget’s fabulous wines come from Premier Cru vineyards that were handed over to him by Henri Jayer.

The winery’s most prominent Premier Cru vineyard is the Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru “Cros Parantoux” planted with 0.72 hectares of Pinot Noir.

Its other prized holdings include 1.4 hectares in Echézeaux and a small plot in the premier cru Les Beaux Monts (which is labeled as "Les Beaumonts.”) It also has village-level vineyards in Savigny-lès-Beaune, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Côte de Nuits-Villages.

The late Henri Jayer used three wine production techniques which propelled him to global fame in the early 1980s. These include ultra-low yields, pre-fermentation cold maceration of grapes, and the use of 100% new oak barrels.

Emmanuel Rouget uses the same techniques to produce his Burgundies.

The winery uses organic farming techniques (no pesticides or herbicides) for the vines. The grapes are destemmed, and the wines are fermented in concrete vats before moving on to barrel aging. The wines are then aged for 20 months or more before bottling.

Emmanuel Rouget discovered his love for winemaking after he began working in his uncle’s (the legendary Henri Jayer) vineyards and eventually took over the house. 

Jayer’s wines, like the Henri Jayer Richebourg Grand Cru, have been known as some of the most brilliant expressions of Pinot Noir.

By the mid-1980s, Emmanuel had taken over most of Henri’s winemaking. By 1996, he was producing wines from Lucien and Georges Jayer vines (his other uncles), as well as from the vineyards of Michelin star chef Jean Crottet. 

In 1996, Henri handed over his vineyards to Emmanuel but continued to bottle some wines under his name until he retired in 2001.

Now, Emmanuel and his sons, Nicolas and Guillaume, create critically acclaimed and sought-after wines under the label Emmanuel Rouget.
