The Fascinating Gevrey Chambertin Appellation

Gevrey-Chambertin-1.jpg

Gevrey Chambertin is a small but prestigious village located in the Cote de Nuits district of Cote d’Or in Burgundy (France.) The appellation lies on the Route des Grand Crus in Cote de Nuits in the south of Dijon and neighbors Vosne-Romanee in the south.

The velvety Pinot Noir grape wines made in this appellation are full-bodied and structured with seductive aromas and exotic flavors.

Gevrey Chambertin houses nine Grand Cru vineyard plots - the highest of all Burgundy villages.

Some of the brilliant wineries that are based here are Domaine Armand Rousseau, Domaine Fourrier, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Sylvie Esmonin, and Domaine Bachelet - with each winery crafting unique Burgundy wines.

And, if you ever drop in, don’t forget to take a trip to the beautiful Combe de Lavaux nature reserve!

Let’s take a deeper look at the backstory of the Gevrey Chambertin appellation.

A Brief History Of Gevrey Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin-2.jpg

Ancient tales suggest that the Chambertin village is named after its farmer - Bertin. It is believed that he planted the first vines of Pinot Noir in his vineyard ‘Champs de Bertin’ which ultimately came to be known as Chambertin.

But, in 2008, archaeological studies of the 120 Gallo-Roman vine plantings showed that they were planted in the 1st century BC. These were the first vine plantings of Bourgogne. During that time, Gallo-Romans added spices as preservatives to their wines.

Emperor Napoleon fell in love with the fine Pinot Noir wines of this appellation, and that’s why during his reign, Chambertin captured the attention of wine connoisseurs. In fact, this is why in the 1880s, the Mayor of Gevrey added “Chambertin” to the village’s name.

So, what is so unique about Gevrey Chambertin’s terroir?

Vineyards And Terroir Of Gevrey Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin-3.jpg

Situated in the south of Dijon, the Gevrey Chambertin appellation has a similar soil structure to Le Montrachet (Cote de Beaune) - two-thirds fine limestone earth and one-third pebbles.

The Gevrey Chambertin appellation has 400 hectares of vineyard plots. Out of this, 310 hectare is planted with the Pinot Noir grape variety.

The vineyard plots are divided into Grand and Premier Cru climats.

Grand Cru Vineyards Of Gevrey Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin-4.jpg

The nine Grand Cru vineyard plots are located on the mid-slopes of Cote d’Or in the south of the Chambertin village in Burgundy. These Grand Cru vineyard plots are:

  • Chambertin
  • Chambertin Clos de Beze
  • Chapelle-Chambertin
  • Charmes-Chambertin
  • Mazoyeres-Chambertin
  • Griotte-Chambertin
  • Latricieres-Chambertin
  • Mazis-Chambertin
  • Ruchottes-Chambertin

Needless to say, each Grand Cru vineyard has a distinct terroir that reflects in their wines.

Premier Cru Vineyards Of Gevrey Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin-5.jpg

The Premier Cru (1er Cru) vineyard plots of Gevrey Chambertin are located in southern Gevrey Chambertin and the upper portion of Cote de Nuits on the higher slopes of Cote d’Or.

Some of the best Premier Cru vineyards are:

  • Clos des Varoilles
  • Les Cazetiers
  • Clos du Chapitre
  • Clos Saint-Jacques
  • Champeaux
  • Petits Cazetiers
  • Combe au Moine
  • Aux Combottes
  • Bel Air
  • Cherbaudes
  • Petite Chapelle
  • Clos Prieur
  • Les Corbeaux

The Premier Cru vineyard plots have brown calcic and lime soils that produce concentrated fruit and delicate red wines.

The Pinot Noir grape variety benefits from the marls and red silt plateau that exposes it to maximum sunlight. Also, the stony mixture adds elegance to the Premier Cru wines, while the clayey marls and fossil shellfish deposits add body and firmness to the wine.

Gevrey Chambertin Wine Styles

Depending on the source of the fruit, Gevrey Chambertin produces three different types of wines - Grand Cru, Premier Cru, and Village.

A. Grand Cru Wines

Gevrey-Chambertin-grand-cru.jpg

These are produced from the fruit of the Gevrey Chambertin Grand cru vineyard plots - the finest soils of Gevrey Chambertin.

These Grand Cru wines are firm but delicate with complex fruit flavors - and are some of the most expensive bottles in Burgundy. These Grand Crus are aged in French oak barrels during winemaking to add exotic smokey notes.

B. Premier Cru Wines

Gevrey-Chambertin-1er-cru.jpg

Gevrey Chambertin Premier Cru wines have a beautiful elegance with a fine texture and a firm body.

Some 1er Cru wines (wines from these Premier Cru vineyards) are as expensive as the Grand Crus because of their rich flavors and velvety elegance. Some of these Premier Crus include Clos St. Jacques and Combe au Moine. Another must-try Premier Cru wine is Domaine Fourrier Clos St-Jacques.

C. Village Wines

Gevrey-Chambertin-village-wine.jpg

Gevrey Chambertin also produces a range of delicious village-level wines from the less prestigious, but some of the finest Burgundy vineyard plots.

The village wines are made from the fruit of different plots. That’s why they tend to have more complex flavors than Premier Crus with a balanced structure.

Specifically, wines from the northern climats have more grip and strength, while those from the southern climats have stronger aromas.

Some wines also have a small percentage of white wine grapes like Chardonnay in the blend.

What Does Gevrey Chambertin Wine Taste Like?

Gevrey-Chambertin-6.jpg

In general, Gevrey Chambertin Pinot Noir wines have a bright ruby color that turns deep carmine with age.

A wine tasting of these robust, full-bodied wines will reveal a firm structure, velvety tannin, and a meaty texture.

Their primary flavors include strawberry, mulberry, blackberry, cherry, violet, mignonette, and rose. If the wine is aged in French oak barrels, it develops musk, liquorice, and earth flavors.

How To Serve Gevrey Chambertin Wine

Gevrey-Chambertin-7.jpg

Gevrey Chambertin wines are best served at 15oC-16oC (59oF-60oF) with meaty dishes that complement their velvety texture.

Some dishes you can have with these Pinot Noir wines are game, rib steak, braised lamb, and fish (like tuna.) You can also serve them with strong cow milk cheese.
