Pierre Yves Colin Morey Wines: Viticulture And Winemaking

pierre-yves-colin-morey-3.jpg

Domaine Pierre Yves Colin Morey owns several vineyards near Le Montrachet with vines over 50 years old.

The Premier Cru vineyard plots include:

  • Chatèniere, Champlots, and Remilly in St Aubin
  • Chenevottes and Caillerets in Chassagne Montrachet

The estate also buys grapes from esteemed vineyards, including Batard Montrachet and Corton Charlemagne.

It primarily produces Chardonnay wines and makes tiny quantities of Pinot Noir and Aligote wines.

For white wines, the grapes are whole-bunch pressed and then matured in larger demi muid barrels. The must is fermented with natural yeast for about 15-18 months.

The resulting wines are not subjected to battonage (stirring settled lees back into the wine), fining (removing unwanted material from the wine in the barrel), or filtration.

The red wines get about 30% whole-bunch fermentation in a barrel after gentle pressing to maximize the finesse and freshness of the resulting wines.

Domaine Pierre Yves Colin Morey was established in 2005 by Pierre Yves Colin and Caroline Morey.

Pierre Yves Colin is the son of famed winemaker Marc Colin - the founder of Domaine Marc Colin. He worked at his father’s estate as a winemaker from 1994 to 2005.

In 2001, he started a négociant business with Caroline, the daughter of Jean Marc Morey - the founder of Domaine Jean Marc Morey. This operation, which began with trading tiny quantities of fine wines, became the foundation of their estate.

In 2005, Pierre Yves left the family business to build his label. He used his inheritance, about six hectares of vineyard plots, to produce the outstanding Burgundy wines that we know today.
