1980 Macallan Whiskey: Characteristics and Price

1980_Macallan_Whiskey_Characteristics_and_Price.jpg

This Speyside single malt whiskey was distilled in 1980 and bottled at the tail end of the 1990s at 43% ABV.

The 1980 sherried Macallans are part of the distillery’s Gran Reserva series. The whiskey is characterized by an exquisite amber color - a result of the prolonged sherry cask aging.

It opens with an inviting nose of sherry, fruit cakes, and Spanish oak spices. The palate is a perfect blend of dried fruits, cherry syrup, and chocolate, ending on a subtle note of candied orange spices.

The 18 year old single malt Scotch whisky now sells for around $4,178 in key markets, including the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

Next, let’s check out the Macallan distillery and how they make their signature single malt Scotch whisky.

The Macallan Distillery and Their Whiskey-Making Practices

The Macallan was founded by Alexander Reid in 1884.

The renowned Scotch distillery, nestled in the heart of the scenic Speyside hills, Scotland, is a part of the Easter Elchies estate.

The Easter Elchies and the distillery are now owned by the Edrington Group after they took over Macallan’s previous owner, the Highland Distillers. The Edrington Group also owns other brands of Highland distillers, like the Black Bottle.

How Is the 1980 Macallan Whisky Made?

This Speyside distillery is known for using traditional Scotch whisky-making methods and quality ingredients to create an exceptional single malt.

Here are some of the whisky-making practices that went into the making of the 18-year-old sherried Macallans:

  • Homegrown barley: The distillery used homegrown Golden Promise barley to produce the 1980 Macallan whiskey. The natural oil of the barley improved the whiskey’s qualities and highlighted its sensual character.
  • Natural water: The water for the whiskey production is sourced from the River Spey. Its freshness and purity help bring out the whiskey’s depth of flavors.
  • Handpicked oak casks: The Macallan follows a unique ‘tree to cask’ system, where they supervise the entire cask-making process. A dedicated team led by their ‘Master of Wood’ handpicks good-quality oak cask wood from Spain and preps it for maturation.

The wood is first dried and shaped into oak casks and then filled with Oloroso sherry (a type of fortified wine) for around 12-18 months.

  • Aging: Then Macallan’s ‘new make’ spirit is aged in these sherry oak casks for 18 years without adding color or chill filtration. Here, the liquid absorbs the sherry cask’s natural aromas and flavors.

Next, let’s check out the investment potential of this single malt whiskey.

Is 1980 Macallan Whisky Investment Worthy?

The finest Macallans are usually produced in small batches. And the Macallan 1980 is no exception. There are only 1,100 bottles of this iconic 18 year old Scotch whisky in the world.

This scarcity resulted in steady price increases over the years. For example, its price rose by 24% in a single year — from $3,533 in 2021 to $4,378 by the tail end of 2022.

Also, most of Macallan’s more recent releases, like the 16 years old Macallan whisky, sell at attractive prices.

But when you buy a vintage Macallan whisky from a secondary market or an auction, remember to note these aspects:

  • Fill level: The amount of liquid in the bottle.
  • Label condition: The label usually contains the lot information, cask number, and more.
  • Original Casing: The original casing consists of purple-sashed white boxes featuring the Easter Elchies House with the closure intact.

All these factors can affect the whisky price. For instance, if you don’t have the original casing, your Macallan’s price can drop by at least 30% in an auction.

Now, investing in bottles is risky if you don’t know how to identify an authentic bottle with good investment potential.

But there is another lucrative way to invest in whiskey — through whiskey casks!

Whiskey casks are an excellent long-term investment because their value increases as the liquor inside matures.

Plus, you don’t have to bother about storage, as these casks are stored and maintained by experts in bonded warehouses.
