Barolo 2015 Vintage

The Barolo 2015 vintage is a product of the growing season’s varied climatic conditions.

The Barolo vineyard plots went through a dry and hot ripening season that transitioned into cooler weather in the Fall. The rainy period in October rejuvenated the Nebbiolo vines and gave the fruit extra freshness.

In 2015, the Nebbiolo grape variety was harvested later than usual. The harvest began at the end of September and continued till the beginning of October when the grapes were at their optimal ripeness and sugar content levels.

Interesting Facts about the Barolo Wine Region

Read on to discover more about the fascinating Barolo wine region:

What are the wine regions in the Barolo DOCG?

The Barolo wine region in Le Langhe is made up of five townships:

  • La Morra
  • Monforte d’Alba
  • Serralunga d’Alba,
  • Castiglione Falletto
  • The Barolo village

A few outlying villages of the region also have Nebbiolo vineyard plantations used to produce Barolo wines.

What’s unique about the climate and terroir of Barolo?

The warm and temperate Barolo region has a continental climate with long summers and autumns ideal for producing top-notch Nebbiolo grapes.

The Barolo wine region has unique terroir. The three main soil types include:

  • Lequio formations of Serralunga d’Alba and a part of Monforte
  • Diano sandstones of Monforte d’Alba and Castiglione Falletto
  • Limestone-rich Tortonian marl of Sant’Agata between Barolo and La Morra

Barbaresco vs. Barolo: What’s the difference?

Both Barolo and Barbaresco in Northern Italy are Nebbiolo-wine making regions. But, the differences between them lie in the soil type, winemaking practices, and wine flavor profiles:

  • The Barbaresco-producing region was officially established in 1894 and the vineyard plots have highly nutrient-rich limestone soil. This reduces the tannins of the wines.

In contrast, Barolo became a wine region almost 50 years earlier, in the 1850s. The soil is predominantly sandstone and clay, and produces fruitier wines with firmer tannins.

  • Barbaresco wines need to be aged only for two years and have a lower aging potential (7 to 15 years) than Barolo.

The Barolo wines go through extended maceration and malolactic fermentation during winemaking and are aged for at least three years. This increases their aging potential significantly to around 20 years and more.
