The Bonnes Mares Grand Cru vineyard covers 15 hectares on the midslope of the Côte dor and lies between Chambolle Musigny and Morey-Saint Denis. It borders Clos de Tart Grand Cru on its northern side and the Route des Grands Crus in the east.

It’s one of the more fragmented Grand Crus in Burgundy. This is because inheritance laws dictate that the land be divided equally between descendants, increasing the number of plots with each generation. This also results in soil variations within the site.

The origin story preferred by the famous Burgundian producers, the Drouhin family, is that a winegrower once unearthed a sculpture in the Bonnes Mares vineyard that represents the three goddesses of fecundity, the bonnes meres.
