The Coppola Wineries

Francis Ford Coppola, probably best known as the director of the Godfather trilogy, had a fantastic run in the 1970s when it comes to films.

With five Academy Award wins and a dozen nominations under his belt, he set his eyes on another venture - the Inglenook Winery in Napa County

1. Inglenook Winery, Napa Valley

Inglenook Winery, Napa Valley

Inglenook is easily California's most esteemed wineries and features a fascinating history to boot!

Named after an old Scottish term for "a cozy corner," the winery originally belonged to William C. Watson, who sold it to Captain Gustave Niebaum after just six years. Niebaum produced well-received Inglenook wines until Prohibition.

However, in 1975, fresh off the profits from The Godfather, Francis Coppola purchased the property and named it the Niebaum Coppola Estate Winery as per French tradition.

Francis and his wife, Eleanor Coppola, produced the winery's star wine, The Rubicon, for the first time under the Niebaum Coppola name in 1978.

But he couldn’t get the rights to the original Inglenook name until 2011. Coppola then hired the French winemaker Philippe Bascaules as the Director of Winemaking to restore the winery to its former glory.

2. Francis Ford Coppola Winery, Sonoma County

In 2006, Coppola purchased the Chateau Souverain property in Geyserville to establish his eponymous winery.

As the first of his Sonoma wineries, it had the highest wine production among the different Coppola wine estates.

The winery has traditionally relied on traditional winemaking methods. This has allowed the winery to produce quality wines at various price points.

Their flagship wine, the Archimedes, is a Cabernet Sauvignon varietal. But the winery also offers Cab Sauv as a blend with Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay.

The Francis Ford Coppola Winery currently features a wine tasting bar, two restaurants, a movie gallery, swimming pools, a performing arts pavilion, and a park area.

3. Francis Ford Coppola Winery Too!, Alexander Valley

Francis Ford Coppola Winery Too!

Nestled in Alexander Valley, just north of the Francis Ford Coppola Winery, you’ll find the Francis Ford Coppola Winery Too!

As the home of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas, the Coppola family proudly carried forward the stories through their wines.

In 2014, Coppola released four wines under the Virginia Dare label, each with a distinct Colonial-era connection to the legend:

  • The White Doe, a refreshing blend of Viognier and Chenin Blanc, named after the myth of Virginia being turned into a White Doe by a sorcerer
  • Manteo, a warrior wine named after the Native American chief who helped English settlers in Roanoke
  • Two Arrowheads, a blend of Roussanne and Viognier, named after the two arrows that pierced the White Doe - one turning her back to a human and the other leading to her death
  • The Lost Colony, a red wine blend of Malbec and Syrah, named after the famed Lost Colony of Roanoke

You can taste these wines from The Family Coppola portfolio at this winery.

4. Domaine de Broglie, Oregon

Domaine de Broglie, Oregon

Located in Dundee Hills, Oregon, the Domaine de Broglie winery lies about a mile away from Oregon’s famous Pinot Noir vines.

As part of the Willamette Valley, approximately 800 feet above the water, the entire area is essentially a viticultural island.

The winery includes the vineyard - which plants Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris - and the Treehouse wine tasting room.

Joining Hands with Delicato

Coppola Wine

In August 2021, Delicato Family Wines acquired the Francis Ford Coppola Winery - including the Archimedes Vineyard - and the Virginia Dare Winery.

Francis Coppola would have an equity stake in Delicato and join the Board of Directors, helping build the company with his years of experience.

Corey Beck, Coppola’s Chief Winemaker, will also join Delicato as EVP and retain his title. The company itself continues to be managed by Chris Indelicato, President and CEO of Delicato Family Wines.

Indelicato states that both families have complimentary wine portfolios and a strong cultural fit, making for a profitable partnership for each party.

Coppola’s wineries will join other California wine brands like Z. Alexander Brown, Noble Wines, Bota Box, and many more.

Coppola and family have retained the Inglenook Winery and the Domaine de Broglie.
