Investing in Domaine Jacques Frederic Mugnier Wines

mugnier-2.jpg

If you’re keen on investing in a bottle or two of Domaine JF Mugnier wines, the best way to do it is through Vinovest. Vinovest is a wine investment company that helps you buy, store, and sell incredible fine wines

Domaine Jacques Frederic Mugniers wines are a good investment choice due to their high prices and long aging potential (5 to 30 years.)

They’re also often hard to obtain due to small production levels — they’re mainly distributed in Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, South Africa, only Singapore in South Asia, and a few cities in the USA (like New Orleans and New York.)

Here’s a quick look at the estate’s annual production numbers:

  • Les Fuees wine: 1,500-3,500 wine bottles
  • Amoureuses wine: 900-2,700 bottles
  • Le Musigny: 2,000-5,000 bottles
  • Bonnes Mares: 900-1,500 bottles
  • Clos de la Maréchale wine: 2,000-3,000 bottles

JF Mugnier’s Musigny Grand Cru and Les Amoureuses Premier Cru vintages are often  praised by critics and enjoy stable price increases. For example, between 2020 and 2022:

  • The 2010 Musigny Grand Cru vintage rose by 65%, from $2,976 to $4,911.
  • The 2015 Les Amoureuses Premier Cru wine increased by 65%, from $1,933 to $3,195.

JF Mugnier wines also perform well at auctions:

  • At a 2020 Christie’s auction, seven bottles of the 2005 Musigny Grand Cru wine sold for $25,000.
  • At a 2018 Christie’s auction, a varied selection of four Mugnier bottles sold for $3,772.

Domaine Jacques Frederic Mugnier Vineyards

In the vineyard, Frederic Mugnier watches closely how the vines are farmed. The estate’s goal is to produce the wines with minimal technological and chemical interferences. Thus, the wines are the purest expression of terroir and nature.

The Domaine has six main vineyards:

  • Chambolle Musigny: The estate has two vine plots in Chambolle Musigny — Les Plantes Premier Cru (0.56 ha) and La Combe d’Orveau (0.77 ha.)
  • Les Fuees (0.71 ha): This vineyard is located along the southern border of the Bonnes Mares appellation.
  • Amoureuses (0.53 ha): The Amoureuses vineyard plot is planted with 60-year-old vines.
  • Le Musigny (1.14 ha): The Domaine’s Le Musigny vines are planted within the Grand Musigny area.
  • Clos de la Marechale (9 ha): This vineyard (formerly Clos des Fourches until the end of the 19th century) is the largest monopole in the Cote d’Or region.
  • Bonnes Mares (0.36 ha): This plot of vines forms a narrow strip along the top of the Bonnes Mares slope.

How Are The Mugnier Wines Made?

mugnier-4.jpg

Frederic Mugnier’s farming practices and winemaking choices lead to the creation of pure, delicate, and elegant wines.

The red wines are vinified as follows:

  • Cold maceration: The destemmed grapes go through cold maceration for about 3 days.
  • Fermentation: The grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts for about 20 days in open vats.
  • Aging: The wine spends 18 months in a 15% new oak barrel.

White wines are vinified as follows:

  • Pressing: Grapes are pressed with the stems.
  • Fermentation: The must is fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats.
  • Aging: The wine is aged for 12 months in a 15% new oak barrel.

All Mugnier wines are bottled unfiltered and unfined.

What’s The Story Behind Domaine Mugnier?

mugnier-5.jpg

Here are a few interesting facts about this prestigious winery:

  • Francois Frederic Mugnier, a spirits maker in Dijon, who produced absinthes, aperitifs, and aromatized wine, bought Château de Chambolle Musigny in 1863 along with a few vineyard plots.
  • After his death, Château de Chambolle Musigny stayed in the Mugnier family and eventually, it was passed on to Francois Frederic’s great-grandson, Jacques Frederic.
  • Jacques Frederic sold the Mugnier family aperitifs business, leased the Chambolle vineyards to Maison Faiveley, and hired Bernard Clair as manager.
  • The vineyard contract ended in 1978, and a few years later, Jacques Frederic’s son, Fred, took over.
  • In 2004, the Clos de la Marechale vineyard returned to Domaine Mugnier after a 25-year lease. Fred created a new Clos de la Marechale Cuvee and expanded the Domaine’s operations.
