Domaine Boisson Vadot

Pierre Boisson Wines, Meursault (10 Fine Bottles, Winemaking)

by Hunter Robillard

Domaine Boisson Vadot, one of the finest cult-producers in Meursault, had managed to stay under the radar for many years.

But, no longer!

The family holdings, best known for their flinty, powerful Chardonnay-based wines, now collaboratively produce them under the Pierre Boisson and Anne Boisson labels.

In this article, we’ll be exploring the Domaine’s Pierre Boisson range of fine wine. We’ll discover the taste of 10 expressive bottles, their age-worthiness and also take a peek at Domaine Boisson Vadot winemaking.

Note: Don’t confuse this Pierre Boisson with Jean Pierre Boisson of Domaine du Père Caboche, more often associated with the La Crau vineyard in Châteauneuf du Pape.

Domaine Boisson Vadot

The Boisson family have been vignerons for over two centuries, with family holdings in the Meursault commune of Côte de Beaune, Burgundy.

The estate produces a range of Premier Cru, village wines, and regional Bourgogne wines from its home base and other locations - including Auxey-Duresses and Monthélie.

The 10-hectare estate belonging to the Boisson family is run by siblings Pierre and Anne Boisson - with the wines labeled as ‘Pierre Boisson’ or ‘Anne Boisson.’

Previous vintages produced by their father, Bernard Boisson, carry the Domaine Boisson Vadot title.

Their wine style has been said to resemble that of Domaine Coche-Dury in some ways. This is unsurprising since Pierre Boisson is known to compare winemaking notes with his old school friend, Raphael Coche (of Coche-Dury.)

Let’s have a look at some excellent bottles to buy now.

Do Pierre Boisson Wines Age Well?

While the Bourgogne tier of wines from Pierre Boisson is primarily meant for early drinking, the Premier Cru and village wines can develop more in the cellar.

Examples include the 2017 Meursault Les Grands Charrons and the 2017 Auxey-Duresses Les Clous cuvées, which can age up to about 20 years.

Let’s look at the winemaking practices of the Boisson family.

Winemaking at Domaine Boisson Vadot

pierre boisson

Organic farming and minimal intervention are at the core of Domaine Boisson-Vadot's winemaking practices, especially when nurturing their many old vines

This allows the production of exotic, zesty, and mineral wines from lieux-dits like Criots and Perchots that have a vine age of 30-50 years old.

The wines are fermented on indigenous yeasts and aged 19-22 months in oak barrels. New oak is used sparingly — about 25-30% for the top cuvées, less for the village wines and regional Bourgogne bottlings. Bottling is performed at the Domaine with no filtration.
