Pierre Girardin: Viticulture And Winemaking

Pierre Girardin Winemaking

Pierre uses a combination of organically grown grapes from his Domaine vineyards and unique vineyards managed by Côte de Beaune growers.

The family Domaine has plenty of contacts in the Côte Dor which allows Pierre to source grapes from rare sites like Puligny Folatières (Lalour Bize Leroy bottles the only other parcel from this vineyard), Volnay Clos des Chênes, Pommard Epenots, and even Montrachet itself.

Pierre takes a hands-free approach to winemaking with minimal interference to showcase each extraordinary terroir.

He destems and presses the grapes before beginning the fermentation process by adding indigenous yeast.

The Chardonnays age in a cellar in 456L barrels custom made by Francois Freres, while the Pinot Noir wines mature in the cellar inside traditional Burgundy oak barrels.

Pierre is slowly reducing the amount of new wood influence in each barrel to avoid imparting unnecessary flavors into the wine.

Once aged, the wines are bottled without filtering or fining.

Now, let’s rewind time and look at Pierre Girardin’s history.

Domaine Pierre Girardin

Pierre Vincent Girardin is a 13th generation wine producer who learned winemaking and an appreciation for the terroir in his father's cellar.

In 2016, Pierre went to “school” with his father and released his first vintage in 2017 under the Domaine Pierre Girardin brand.

It’s incredibly rare for a winemaker's first vintage to compete with best of Burgundy, especially when the winemaker is just over 20 years old.
