A Quick Introduction To Chambertin Clos de Beze

chambertin-clos-de-beze-1.jpg

Chambertin Clos de Beze is one of the nine Grands Crus located within the Gevrey Chambertin commune.

It’s the only Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard prefixed with the name ‘Chambertin,’ while the other seven Grands Crus (apart from Le Chambertin itself) apply it as a suffix. And, while a Clos de Beze wine may be called a ‘Chambertin,’ the reverse is not applicable.

Clos de Beze is 14.53 hectares in size and received its Grand Cru status in 1937.

However, this vineyard has existed long before that. Its first mention in Cote de Nuits history was in 640 AD, as property belonging to the Abbey of Beze, making it one of France's oldest wine-growing regions.

Let’s find out how these stately wines produced here taste and what dishes would pair well.

Chambertin Clos de Beze Wines: Taste And Food Pairing

The iconic Pinot Noir wines of Clos de Beze are full-bodied, powerful, and opulent.

Tasting notes often describe concentrated fruit flavors and aromas like strawberry, cherry, blackcurrant, along with liquorice and spices.

Complex dishes often balance these wines well, like chicken in red wine sauce, roast lamb in gravy, or a rib steak. Soft-centered cheeses make a delicious pairing too.

Serve more youthful Clos de Beze wines at 12-14°C, and 14-16°C for older vintages.

Vinovest is an online AI-based platform that can help you easily buy, store, and sell fine wine from anywhere — whether it’s from France, California, or New Zealand.

Chambertin Clos de Beze wines are highly-valued, age-worthy, and limited in production.

Several top producers own parcels in Clos de Beze, including Armand Rousseau, Joseph Drouhin, and Domaine Faiveley, making red Burgundy capable of aging 12-30 years.

Many of the top vintages receive incredibly positive ratings (often 95 points or more) from wine critics like Allen Meadows, Jasper Morris, and Neal Martin.

They also often have remarkable growth in pricing.

  • The 2015 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru increased by 63% from $2698 in July 2020 to $4388 in January 2022.
  • The 2008 Joseph Drouhin Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru more than doubled its price from $299 in April 2020 to $611 in January 2022.

Auction prices are also fairly impressive. For example, a magnum of the 2008 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Bèze sold for $6783 at a Sotheby’s auction in 2021.

Let’s see what kind of terroir produces such valuable wines.

The Terroir Of Chambertin Clos de Bèze

chambertin-clos-de-beze-4.jpg

The Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru vineyard occupies a choice location with an eastern exposure, mild incline, and an elevation of 275-300m.

Clos de Beze soils consist of rocky, free-draining layers of limestone and clay in varying proportions.

The nutrient-poor limestone soils ensure that the vine produces small, intensely flavored grapes.

The vineyard’s easterly aspect allows the grapes to reach full ripeness in the cool continental climate while retaining necessary acidity levels.

Savor Sheer Opulence In A Glass of Clos de Beze!

The Pinot Noir wines of Chambertin Clos de Beze are a classical expression of sheer opulence and power, captured in liquid ruby form.

It’s unsurprising that French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was once a patron of this vineyard, though he had his wine heavily diluted with water.

Wines with the pedigree to grace the table of an emperor would make not only a fine addition to your cellars but also a fascinating conversation starter.
