A Brief History Of La Romanee
Originally composed of six parcels, La Romanee was known as “En La Romanée” in the 17th century. The state confiscated the parcels from the church and auctioned them off during the French revolution.
Between 1815 and 1826, Général Comte Liger-Belair acquired the parcels and reassembled them to form a single parcel, registering it as “La Romanee”.
The Michaudet family handled the vinification from 1933 to 1945. And, from 1946 until 2001, the Forey family looked after the vineyard and made wines. Later in 2001, Comte Liger-Belair regained control of La Romanee.
All the viticulture and vinification was done by the Comte Liger-Belair family from 2002 to 2005. However, the wines produced were split between Domaine du Liger Belair and Bouchard Pére et Fils till 2006.
Since 2006, Domaine du Liger-Belair has exercised total control over the Grand Cru vineyard and the sale of La Romanee wines.
