The Iconic Domaine du Pegau

Domaine du Pegau is located in Châteauneuf du Pape (CDP) appellation in the Rhone wine region of Southern France. The estate is owned by the Feraud family, which has been growing vine plantings, olive, and fruit trees in Provence since the 17th century.

The name Pegau originates from the old Provencal word for a wine jug found in the excavations of the 14th century Avignon.

The Domaine currently produces a variety of red and white wines, some of which are produced under a negociant label.

Now, what is Château Pegau?

The Feraud family expanded their property holdings in 2012 by buying Château Pegau in Cotes du Rhone. This Château focuses on Vin de Table (table wine) and wine under the Cotes du Rhone villages classification.

Next, let’s see how it all started.

A Brief History of Pegau

606082cfffb11cc998c855d2_pegau-2.jpg

In the 1900s, the Feraud family expanded the estate to 21 hectares of CDP vineyards. They divided the land between their four children.

The youngest one - Paul Feraud, was responsible for the management of Pegau (named Domaine Feraud at that time) and the wine was sold to negociants.

When Paul’s daughter Laurence joined the business in 1987, she proposed building their own winery. That marked the birth of Domaine du Pegau as we know it today.

In the next few years, Laurence and her father Paul, managed to expand their vineyard holdings and distribution networks.

In 2012, Laurence acquired 41 more hectares of vineyards 4 miles from the domaine in the Rhone Valley. She named the house located in the heart of the vineyard holdings Château Pegau.

Domaine du Pegau and Château Pegau Vineyards and Terroir

The CDP vineyards of Domaine du Pegau consist of:

  • Châteauneuf du Pape Red: 21 hectares
  • Châteauneuf du Pape White: 2 hectares
  • Vin de Table: 8 hectares

Domaine du Pegau vineyards are predominantly planted with the Grenache varietal, and some grape vines of the other 12 Châteauneuf du Pape authorized varietals.

The terroir is primarily sandy mixed with pebbles and some limestone. The white grape vineyards are cultivated using 100% biodynamic farming techniques - thanks to their small size.

Chateau Pegau spans over the following vineyard holdings:

  • Côtes du Rhône Villages Red: 5 hectares
  • Côtes du Rhône Red: 20 hectares
  • Côtes du Rhône White: 5 hectares
  • Vin de Table: 11 hectares

Chateau Pegau’s vineyards are planted with various red wine grapes like:

  • Grenache
  • Cinsault
  • Mourvèdre
  • Syrah

The white wine grapes planted in the Pegau vineyards include Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc.

Château Pegau’s vineyards consist of clay soil, pebbles, and sand.

So, what wines does Pegau produce?

The Pegau Wine Styles

There are 11 wines in total produced under the Pegau label:

1. Domaine du Pegau

For the red Domaine du Pegau wines, the wine maker uses grapes with the stems to increase the wine’s tannin levels. The grape must undergoes fermentation in concrete tanks with natural yeasts. The maceration period is 12 days.

The wines are:

  • Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Réservée Rouge: This wine is made with 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre, and 10% other red grapes. The wine ages for two years in old foudres. About 6,500 cases are produced each year.
  • Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Laurence: This Cuvee is made with 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and Mourvedre, Counoise, and 10% other red wine grapes. The wine is aged in old oak casks for four years. Only 650 cases are produced annually.
  • Domaine du Pegau Cuvee da Capo: This wine is made with 70% Grenache, small amounts of Mourvedre, Syrah, and other grape varietals from the La Crau parcel.

Aging takes around two years. About 500 cases are produced in each vintage.

The white wines are made by directly pressing and fermenting the grapes in controlled-temperature stainless steel tanks.

The two white wines are:

  • Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reserve Blanc: A white Chateauneuf du Pape wine  made with 60% Clairette , 20% Grenache Blanc, 10% Bourboulenc, and 10% Roussanne grapes. Only 250 cases are produced each year.
  • Domaine Pegau Cuvee A Tempo:  This white Chateauneuf du Pape is made with equal parts of the white wine grapes Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Roussanne and spends four years aging in barrels. About 100 cases are produced annually.

So, are these Rhone wines a good investment opportunity?

Investing in Pegau Wines

6057600a7e17f707a31227af_wine-rack-6.jpg

Some of the Domaine Pegau bottles are great investment wines.

On average, the wines can safely be stored for 6-7 years. However, the best vintages can last up to 25 years of bottle age after their release.

Most Pegau wines receive excellent reviews from wine critics like Robert Parker, Jeb Dunnuck, and Joe Czerwinski and have received a few 100-point scores.

Domaine Pegau’s Cuvee da Capo is one of the most expensive wines in Rhone. Its limited production (made in only seven vintages of about 500 cases annually) makes it a very desirable wine amongst wine collectors.

Domaine Pegau also enjoys steady prices with occasional increases. For example:

  • Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee 1989 went up by 60% from $135 in 2020 to $217 in 2021.
  • Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence 2011 grew by 38% from $94 in 2019 to $130 in 2021.

Pegau wines have also done well at auctions:

  • In a 2014 Christie’s auction, 12 bottles of Domaine Pegau Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée da Capo 2000 wine sold for $6,473.
  • At a 2021 Strauss & Co auction, a 6-bottle lot of Domaine du Pegau Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée, 2004, 2006, and 2007 were sold for $1,473.
